Kenworth Launches Major Fuel Economy Awareness Program To Assist Fleets,
Owner Operators
Publishes White Paper, Creates New Website Link
KIRKLAND, Wash., Oct. 29, 2001 - Kenworth Truck Company launched a major
fuel economy awareness program today to assist fleets and owner operators
interested in improving their fuel efficiency.
To kick off the program, Kenworth has produced a comprehensive "White Paper
on Fuel Economy" and created a "Dynamics of Fuel Efficiency" website link at
www.kenworth.com. Kenworth's 14-page white paper may be downloaded
electronically from the new website link.
Kenworth's "White Paper on Fuel Economy" explores six major areas -
aerodynamics, component spec'ing, advanced technology, route management,
driver behavior, and proper maintenance. The component spec'ing section
offers a tire tips section, courtesy of Bridgestone.
"Kenworth's new white paper provides useful information for fleets and owner
operators looking to save money by boosting fuel economy and controlling
operating costs," said Ed Caudill, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice
president.
Despite the recent fall from extremely high diesel prices, Caudill noted
that fuel continues to be one of the leading operating costs in the trucking
industry. "It's certainly a smart business decision to explore ways to
achieve improved fuel economy for your fleet or truck," Caudill said. "I've
yet to meet a fleet manager or owner operator who'd be unhappy to keep more
money in their pocket by spending less on fuel."
The savings per truck can be significant. For example, a truck that travels
100,000 miles annually and gets 6-1/2 miles per gallon uses 15,385 gallons
of fuel. That costs $23,077, assuming an average cost of $1.50 per gallon.
An increase to 7 miles per gallon cuts annual usage to 14,285 gallons and
reduces the cost to $21,428. That's a savings of nearly $1,649, or just over
7%. A fleet running 100 trucks would save nearly $165,000 in just one year
and almost $500,000 over three years.
The Kenworth white paper offers recommendations and tips to help fleets and
owner operators reduce fuel costs. Operating a properly spec'd aerodynamic
truck is one key step. Spec'ing tips also focus on enhancing vehicle
aerodynamics, reducing mechanical resistance, selecting the right engine and
gearing for the intended application, and choosing the proper tires to
reduce rolling resistance. The white paper also suggests fuel-economy tips
to help drivers get the most out of their equipment and proper maintenance
reminders.
In addition, the white paper examines Kenworth's significant activities in
the fuel economy arena. "Kenworth invests significant resources in pursuit
of fuel economy advances to benefit customers," Caudill said. "We're
committed to continually explore ways to achieve this goal - whether it's on
the engineer's computer, in the wind tunnel, on the test track, or on the
highway."
Kenworth engineers pursue greater fuel efficiency through aerodynamic
enhancements achieved by using sophisticated computer technology - called
computational fluid dynamics - combined with wind tunnel, test track and
real-world highway testing. The white paper includes miles per gallon
results for the aerodynamic Kenworth T2000 model compiled from both
on-highway testing and runs on the PACCAR Technical Center's 1.6-mile test
track.
In addition, Kenworth's applications engineers work with Kenworth dealers
and customers in spec'ing vehicles to meet customers' fuel economy
requirements. Kenworth engineers also focus on advanced technologies to
further enhance the fuel economy of tomorrow's trucks.

section on Kenworth's website for continuing information on this important
topic.
