SILVER CROWN, SPRINTS, MIDGETS & IRL AT NAZARETH!
USAC's three National racing series will share the spotlight on pavement
for the first time ever April 20-21, 2002 as they join the Indy Racing
League for what promises to be a fantastic weekend of competition at the
Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway.
"We are certainly looking forward to this landmark event," said USAC
President/CEO John Capels, who joined Nazareth Speedway General Manager
Craig Rust in making the joint announcement. "Although this event will
mirror in many respects the extremely successful "Cooper World Classic" at
Phoenix, it will, for the first time, feature the Stoops Freightliner Sprint
Cars in concert with the Silver Crown and National Midget Car Series on
pavement. It offers a tremendous opportunity for our participants to exhibit
their skills in all three types of race cars for race fans of the Eastern
United States, where each series has ventured on occasion separately during
the past five years."
A 25-mile Midget Car and 25-mile Sprint Car feature are expected to be
part
of Saturday's activities, with a 100-mile Silver Crown feature preceding
Sunday's 1 pm (ET) scheduled start of the IRL race.
Paul White of Temple, Texas and J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. have already
wrapped up 2001 USAC National Championships and Dave Darland of Lincoln,
Ind. currently leads the WorldCom National Midget Car standings with three
races remaining on the west coast. All three are looking forward to
competing in the April 20-21 Nazareth event.
Drivers John Heydenreich of Bloomsburg, Pa. and Aaron Fike of Galesburg,
Ill. traveled to Allentown, Pa. to participate in today's press conference
addressing the newly-announced event. Heydenreich is extremely popular with
eastern race fans and Fike's victory in this year's well-attended Silver
Crown race at Richmond, Va. made him, at age 18, the youngest winner in
series history!
The only previous appearance of USAC's three national racing series in a
single racing program has been at the annual "4-Crown Nationals" at the
Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. That event enjoyed its 22nd running this
September, attracting more than 100 USAC teams in the three participating
series.
