South Florida Auto Show News

MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Oct. 24 -- It's time again for the first major U.S. auto show of the season. As usual, several manufacturers will use the South Florida International Auto Show to unveil their newest models.

The annual 10-day show opens Friday, October 26 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, and by closing time November 4 more than 650,000 people will have examined 1,000 vehicles from 40 automakers.

At least four manufacturers will use news conferences on opening day to showcase new models. Saab will unveil the updated version of its sophisticated flagship sedan, the 9-5. Daimler-Chrysler will highlight its "tougher outside, softer inside" 2002 Dodge Ram Pickup. Hyundai has refined its sporty Tiburon and will discuss its appeal to young-at-heart, economy-minded drivers. And Pontiac will showcase its new Vibe, a modern hatchback that combines the best of SUV and wagon design.

"We've always had terrific variety at our show," said Ken Page, show chairman. "South Floridians enjoy their cars and they really respond to this event, which is one of the nation's largest."

Now in its 31st year, the South Florida show fills one-million square feet with cars, trucks, SUVs, prototypes and accessories. The event, which typically draws crowds from Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America, also will dazzle with concept cars that suggest the industry's future designs. A special Million Dollar Alley display will spotlight exotic automobiles with six-figure price tags. The Memory Lane exhibit presents a room-full of classic cars from yesteryear, reaching back to the 1920s.

According to Page, the 2002 Honda CR-V is this year's Official Show Car. "And visitors can register to win a new Jeep Liberty Sport, one of our two give-aways. Another lucky winner will receive a two-year lease to a Jaguar X- Type."

The South Florida International Auto Show is produced by the South Florida Auto-Truck Dealers Association, which comprises 220 dealerships in Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties.
