Tornado for Car Infotainment
ALAMEDA, Calif.--Oct. 22, 2001--Wind River Systems, Inc. , a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, today introduced Tornado(R) for Car Infotainment, a complete development platform for creating car infotainment and telematic devices such as in car navigation systems, global positioning systems, car entertainment systems, and wireless automotive devices.Tornado for Car Infotainment provides a pre-integrated software development solution that combines Wind River's leading embedded software with the latest automotive connectivity and wireless networking protocols. In addition, Wind River partners provide integrated solutions in the area of voice recognition, browser service delivery management, and complementary networking -- giving developers all the necessary tools they need to quickly build competitive, reliable, and cost-effective car infotainment and telematic devices.
"In less than ten years, there will be over 150 million telematics-enabled vehicles on the road, forming a telematics network that is ripe for services and applications," said Phil Magney, principal analyst, Telematics Research Group. "Wind River's development platform has the potential to help facilitate this growth."
"We have been using Tornado and VxWorks(R) for our car information systems successfully for several years," said Dr. Erich Geiger, CEO of Harman/Becker Automotive Systems. "As we are facing demands for greater product functionality, Tornado for Car Infotainment is clearly the solution that will help us achieve time to market with more advanced products. In addition, this clearly demonstrates Wind River's understanding of the automotive developer requirements and their commitment to this market."
With the growing requirement to be connected to the outside world, protected, productive and entertained while in a car, there is an increasing demand for telematic and infotainment devices in today's automotive electronics industry.
"The challenge for OEMs and tier1 suppliers alike, is to provide competitive, flexible, scalable, and reliable in-car telematic applications that incorporate emerging industry standards and meet tightening development cycles, while still remaining cost effective," said Scot Morrison, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Automotive and Industrial business unit. "Wind River is introducing Tornado for Car Infotainment to give them all the necessary pre-integrated tools and components to shift the focus from integration and testing of enabling technologies to their value-added application software."

"With the rapidly growing need for speech applications and solutions in the automotive marketplace, we are delighted to be the premier voice provider of Wind River's Tornado for Car Infotainment Platform," said Kurt W. Flygare, Fonix vice president of sales. "We believe that Fonix highly-accurate voice recognition and natural-sounding voice output system will integrate seamlessly with Wind River's complete end-to-end telematics solution. We are confident that Wind River's platform, that has the support of many key players in the telematics market, will be extremely well received by Tier1 auto suppliers and manufacturers.
"With Wind River's Tornado for Car Infotainment coupled with Hitachi's SuperH system architecture, designers will significantly benefit from a shorter development cycle as well as a broad range of product and third party support," said Sami Nassar, director of strategic marketing at Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. "As a key supplier of an automotive system solution, Hitachi will continue to drive the market with top-tier operating system providers like Wind River."
"With the advent of advanced in-vehicle telematics applications, we have seen increasing requirements for reliable high-speed communications to be deployed in the next generation of cars," said Vincent Guyaux, vice-president and general manager, Real-Time Solutions division, at Mindready. "We are really excited to join our efforts to those undertaken by major embedded technology partners such as Wind River in order to offer the telematics industry powerful integrated solutions. Mindready's IEEE-1394 comprehensive range of hardware and software-based products are compatible with Wind River's Tornado real-time development environment. It is based on such successful synergies with industry partners that Mindready has been able to deploy lately MARP (Mindready Intelligent Reference Platform), an intelligent in-vehicle communication platform, aimed at designing, integrating and testing telematics applications."
"MOST(R) technology is the foundation of a new class of systems previously not possible. Through the use of MOST, navigation systems, telephone, security, audio and video are integrated in a way that is intuitive and easy to use. The high technology involved is hidden from the user so with the push of a single button all devices act in harmony, without further driver actions. The newest BMW 7 series incorporates MOST today and the majority of car makers around the world have announced plans to support and adopt the technology," said David Knapp, chief technology officer at Oasis SiliconSystems. "Using Wind River's tools, with built-in OASIS MOST NetServices software, enables Wind River's customers to develop sophisticated car infotainment applications without worrying about the complexities of distributing functions around a MOST network."
"Sun and Wind River share an open systems approach to telematics," said Behfar Razavi, engineering group manager, Java Software, Sun Microsystems, Inc.. "Combined with Sun's end-to-end Java Auto Technology, Tornado for Car Infotainment will enable automotive developers to spend less time integrating individual components that go into telematics devices and more time innovating new features into their applications."
