ARA POINT RACE HEATING UP
NEWPORT, TN - The heat is rising on the American Racing Association (ARA)
Kool Seal Challenge circuit. And Keith Bumgarner hopes to put more heat on
Scott Kilby in the $5000 to-win Thunder in the Mountains 250 at Newport
Speedway Saturday night.
Bumgarner won the series' last race, Sept. 22nd at Peach State Speedway in
Jefferson, GA., and trimmed six points off Kilby's lead. But Kilby, who
won the previous two events, still leads 521-507 heading into the Thunder
in the Mountains 250.
Bumgarner, of Conover, NC, was clearly dominate at Peach State, qualifying
quickest, then inverting and starting sixth. He charged his #95 Country
Chair Ford to the front on lap 16, never to be headed and beat Kilby's #30
A&H Windows Chevrolet by three seconds.
Qualifying is ultimately important to Kool Seal Challenge competitors as
the top two qualifiers each receive five bonus points. The fastest
qualifier also earns the $100 Battery Supply of Virginia pole award. The
top five qualifiers have the option of inverting, or starting further back
in the field, and then earn up to 10 bonus passing points. Points are then
earned according to the number of starters (if 25 cars start, the winner
gets 25 points, second place 24, etc.).
An open practice is set for Friday night. On Saturday the gates are
scheduled to open at Noon. Race-day practice is scheduled to start at 2
p.m. Time trials for the Battery Supply of Virginia Pole Award are set for
5:30 p.m. The Thunder in the Mountains 250, $5,000 to-win feature race is
slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
