Hardeeville Motor Speedway Season Finale
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (October 13, 2001) - The season finale at the Hardeeville
Motor Speedway saw two new types of divisions on the track that provided lots
of excitement and a taste of some of the new things that will be seen in the
2002 racing season. The Dirt-Style Late Models, as run throughout many dirt
tracks in Georgia and South Carolina made an appearance on the asphalt. For
some of the drivers it was the first time they had ever raced their cars on
the smooth asphalt rather that using the asphalt to tow their cars to a dirt
track to race. The "flat sided" Late Models provided close-wheel-to-wheel
action in the 50-lap caution-free feature that was won by randy cook of
Savannah, Ga. Another vehicle that competed at HMS "out of its element" was
the flying lawn mowers from the B.C. Racing team. Normally found on the
grass, the highly-modified machines reached speeds nearing 70 m.p.h. on the
high banked of the Hardeeville Motor Speedway. Alan Elder of Gainesville,
Ga. claimed the victory in the 10-lap main event.
Other winners included Hubert Into from Bloomingdale, Ga. picking up his
fourth straight Street Stock feature win. Steven Moore from St. George, S.C.
edged out Mark Terry from Rincon, Ga. in the Mini stock main event. Scott
Thorne from Hardeeville, S.C. was once again awarded the feature win when Don
Dean of Sheldon, S.C. was failed post race inspection for the second
consecutive week. The results are currently unofficial as Dean has appealed
the disqualification to Speedway management. A final decision is still
pending. Corey Fletcher from Bloomingdale, Ga., who also finished second in
the dirt-stlye Late Model feature, won the Pro/Masters Legends Cars feature
over Billy Gomez of Fayetteville, Ga. Garrett Shurling of Ellabel, Ga. led
all 25 laps of the Semi-Pro feature but was challenged late by Jonathan
Haidon of Hilton Head, S.C. and Thomas Coburn III of Ridgeland, S.C. and
Walter Reardon of Savannah, Ga. Haidon, Coburn and Readon finished second,
third and fourth respectively. Billy Schilling of Hilton Head, S.C. won the
Legends Cars Young Lions feature and Tish Mock from Ridgeland, S.C. won the
Lady Legends division.
