Sondi Eden wins career-first ARCA Midget main; Davis takes title

DEGRAFF OH, 10-7-01 – Crawfordsville, Indiana driver Sondi Eden won her
career-first ARCA Auto Value/NAMARS co-sanctioned feature event Sunday
afternoon at Shady Bowl Speedway while Spartanburg, South Carolina
driver AJ Davis, by virtue of sixth place finishing position, won the
2001 ARCA Auto Value Midget Series driving championship.

Eden, in the Dave Stetler Chevy-Olds-Cadillac Brayton Stealth, charged
from the 13th starting position and passed Matt Brun with less than two
laps remaining in the 30-lap main event to take the top spot over
runner-up finisher Billy Wease who raced from the 11th starting
position. Travis Miniea finished third in the Penn-Ohio Self Storage
Esslinger Hawk.

Gene Lee Gibson, who was vying for his fourth consecutive ARCA Midget
championship, did all he could to take the title away from Davis
charging from the 20th starting position to finish fourth but fell just
short in the final point tally by 40 markers. ARCA Auto Value Midget
Series veteran Gary Harrell, in the Dove Racing-TJ Roofing Autocraft
Hawk, finished fifth.

Davis, in Rick Harrell’s Kayo Lumber Brayton Hawk, posted one feature
win throughout the year as well as two Old Milwaukee Quick Time awards
en route to his first series crown.

Miniea led the first 12 laps before Ron Gregory took control on the 13th
circuit. Gregory held on for 14 laps before leading ARCA Midget rookie
contender Matt Brun passed Gregory for the lead on the 27th lap.
However, Brun’s lead was short-lived when Eden motored by as the leaders
came down to receive the white flag.

Teddy Beach raced from 23rd to seventh in the final running order ahead
of Rich Corson, open-wheel veteran Mel Kenyon and Tom Briggs to complete
the top-ten finishers respectively.
