U.S. F2000 ALUMNI ENJOY WINNING WEEKEND

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. F2000 ALUMNI ENJOY WINNING WEEKEND

	FAIRFIELD, N.J. (October 8, 2001)—This past weekend the U.S. F2000 National
Championship Presented by Speedvision once again showed why it is considered
North America’s premier open-wheel training series, as series alumni
captured two wins and two podium finishes in four races.
At the Indy Racing Northern Light Series finale in Texas, fans witnessed
one of the most exciting races in recent memory. Racing on the high-banked
oval, the race featured fantastic side-by-side battles for position. With
three cars abreast at the checkered flag, Sam Hornish Jr. edged Scott Sharp
by a mere 0.0188 second, to win the closest finish in series history. For
Hornish Jr., who raced in U.S. F2000 from 1996 to 1998, capturing five
top-five finishes, it concluded a stunning 2001 season. In his second season
in the IRNLS, Hornish Jr. won three races and captured the championship with
503 points, earning the $1 million prize.
With three races remaining in the 2001 season, the CART FedEx Championship
traveled to Houston. Starting 23rd on the difficult street course, Memo
Gidley quickly established himself as one of the quicker cars on track.
Using a brilliant pit strategy, Gidley steadily made his way to the front of
the field. At the conclusion of the 100-lap event, Gidley, the 1995 U.S.
F2000 Rookie of the Year, had finished third, to capture his second career
podium finish.
New to the event in 2001, the Dayton Indy Lights Championship raced at Road
Atlanta on the Petit Le Mans weekend. Starting an uncharacteristic sixth,
series front-runner Dan Wheldon drove a superb race. In less than stellar
conditions, the 1999 U.S. F2000 champion worked his way to the front. On the
last lap, Wheldon took the lead at the famous bridge and led the remainder
of the lap to win his second consecutive race. The win moves Wheldon into
second in the championship, with two races to be left.
In addition to the CART FedEx Championship, the CART Toyota Atlantic
Championship battled on the streets of Houston. Starting fourth, series
veteran David Rutledge drove a fantastic race. On the opening-lap Rutledge,
who raced in U.S. F2000 in 1997, was involved in a multi-car incident that
forced him to pit. Following the pit stop Rutledge went on a charge. Making
his way through traffic, Rutledge went from last to third, to capture his
sixth podium finish of 2002.
Other alumni enjoying a successful weekend were Lance Norick, Jason
LaPoint, Kasey Kahne, Guy Cosmo and Jon Herb. Norick finished fifth in the
NASCAR Craftsman Truck race at Texas Motor Speedway. LaPoint, who captured
the 2001 U.S. F2000 championship at Sebring the previous weekend, finished
fifth in the CART Toyota Atlantic race. Kahne, making his second start in
Atlantics, finished seventh. Cosmo the 1999, U.S. F2000 ACC Champion,
finished eighth in the same race. Herb, in his second race as a team owner
in the IRNLS, finished ninth at Texas.
The U.S. F2000 National Championship will commence its 13th season in the
spring at an event yet to be determined.
