Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard finished 12th
in today's Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston. Kanaan started 10th, lost
a position to Roberto Moreno on Lap 3 of today's 100-lap event, and stayed
in 11th through the first round of pit stops under the first caution period
of the day on Lap 40. He quickly moved back to 10th place before pitting
again under yellow on Lap 52 for a top-off of fuel that would enable him to
go the distance. He rejoined the race in 14th place, climbed back to 10th
by Lap 94, but lost two spots in the closing laps Kanaan picked up a
championship point with his 12th-place finish, bringing his total to 78 on
the year and keeping him in ninth place in the standings.
His new teammate Casey Mears, in the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing
Honda-Reynard, started 25th and finished 17th today, two laps off the pace.
Mears also pitted for the first time under yellow on Lap 40, opted not to
pit on the Lap 52 yellow, but was forced to make an unscheduled stop on Lap
75 to replace a punctured left-rear tire. He was black-flagged for leaving
the pits 1 mph over the 50 mph speed limit, but the penalty did not affect
his final position. Polesitter Gil de Ferran won for the second race in a
row today and took over the points lead from Kenny Brack. He easily
outdistanced runner-up Dario Franchitti, with Memo Gidley taking third.
The next race on the CART FedEx Championship Series schedule is next weekend
's Round 19, the Shell 300 at Laguna Seca Raceway near Monterey, Calif.
TONY KANAAN
"We had a top-10 car today, for sure, but probably not much better than
that. Unfortunately, the car got a little out of balance at the end.
Otherwise, we would have gotten our top-10 finish. Hey, we did all we good
to finish in the points. It's on to Laguna Seca. It's a track that I like
a lot and I can't wait to get there."
