Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston - Qualifying Notes/Quotes - Saturday,
Oct. 6, 2001
George R. Brown Convention Center - Houston, Texas - 1.527-Mile Temporary
Street Course
Round 18 of 21 on the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series
Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard qualified
10th for Sunday's Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston. He recorded his
best lap of 1 minute, 0.548 seconds (an average of 90.791 mph) on his last
trip around the 1.527-mile downtown street course in front of the George R.
Brown Convention Center during today's second to two 30-minute group
qualifying sessions. It was Kanaan's best lap of the weekend and puts him
on the outside of the fifth row on tomorrow's starting grid.
His new teammate Casey Mears, in the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing
Honda-Reynard, qualified 25th for his first Champ Car race on a temporary
street circuit. This is the #66 entry's first event since Alex Zanardi's
racing accident at the American Memorial 500 in Germany three weeks ago
today. Mears, who finished fourth at last season's finale in Fontana,
Calif., his only other career Champ Car start, qualified in the first group
session today and had a best lap of 1:02.789 (87.536 mph) to take the
inside-13th-row starting position. Gil de Ferran took the pole with a fast
time of 59.421 (92.513 mph), with Bruno Junqueira taking the
outside-front-row starting spot in 59.943 (91.707 mph). Kenny Brack
qualified third in 59.947 (91.701 mph).
Race time Sunday is 1 p.m. local time (2 p.m. EDT) with a live broadcast set
for ESPN. Today's qualifying show will be shown on ESPN2 at 2:30 a.m. EDT
Sunday. The Sunday-morning warm-up show CART2DAY is also on ESPN2 at 11
a.m. EDT.
TONY KANAAN
"All I can say is my entire heart and soul went into that last lap because
that's absolutely all the car would give me. I knew when I started the lap
that (team owner) Morris (Nunn) was either going to happy or sad because I
was either going to stick it in the wall, or get a really fast lap. It
moved me from 12th into the top 10, which is not a bad place to start here.
That was sheer determination. I definitely don't like being a second off
the pole. Now we have to go to work on our race setup."
