NHRA SUMMIT RACING SERIES - SOUTHEAST DIVISION FINALS

RACE OF CHAMPIONS CROWNED; DIVISIONAL TITLES TO BE SETTLED SATURDAY

        Commerce, Ga.- Track champions from sixteen member tracks in the
categories of Super Pro, Pro, Street, Pro Bike/Motorcycle, and High School
participated in the NHRA Southeast Division Race of Champions.  Claiming
victories for their respective tracks were Rob Nelson of Bristol Dragway in
Super Pro, Randy Larson of Moroso Motorsports Park in Pro, Rick Zorn of
Savannah Dragway in Street, Geoff Godfrey of Sumerduck in Pro
Bike/Motorcycle, and Andy Mitchell of Savannah Dragway in High School.
        In the Super Pro category, Nelson drove to victory in his '71
Duster with a 1/8th-mile elapsed time of 6.788 seconds at 99.12 mph against
a dial-in of 6.78 seconds.  The Pro category saw Larson out-run Brian
Radley of Gainesville Raceway, 6.897 (6.86 dial-in) seconds to a losing
7.903 (7.91 dial-in) seconds.
        Saturday's action will feature the much anticipated individual
championships in Super Pro, Pro, Street and Pro Bike/Motorcycle. The four
winners of this event will then qualify for the NHRA Summit Racing Series
National Finals, to be held in conjunction with the Auto Club of Southern
California NHRA Finals, November 8-11 in Pomona, Calif. There they will
compete for a winner-take-all purse of $5,000 and the title of 2001 Summit
Racing Series National Champion. Also to be decided Saturday is the team
title will be decided with all tracks gunning for last year's champion,
Moroso Motorsports Park.
        In other racing action, the Best Appearing Car award went to Claude
Hall of Bristol Dragway and his 1966 Chevy Nova. Meanwhile, the Best
Appearing Bike award was earned by Sumerduck Dragway's own Chuck White for
his '66 Suzuki GSXR.  Finally, taking home the Best Engineered honors were
Jimmy Montgomery of Gainesville Raceway and Tony Girardi of Moroso
Motorsports Park for car and bike respectively.
        Gates will open at 7:00 a.m. with first round of elimination's set
to begin at 9:00 a.m. The run order for the Summit Racing Series Divisional
Finals is Pro, Super Pro, Pro Bike, and Street.  For more information call
