Hardeeville Motor Speedway Proud to be American

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (September 15, 2001) - On a night when many sports
postponed their events, the Hardeeville Motor Speedway management decided
to hold its scheduled races on Saturday night with many new winners and
many fans showing their patriotism by wearing red, white and blue colors.
The night was filled with an enormous amount of enthusiasm for
entertainment and the dedication of thoughts and prayers for all of those
affected in the recent tragedies in New York and Washington D.C.

Between the makeup features from August 18th and the regularly scheduled
features for the evening, all of the drivers brought their cars to the
frontstretch and proceeding to the grandstands with their helmets. After
all donations were tabulated, a total of $1,190.49 was raised for the
American Red Cross. Upon hearing the amount, the owners of the speedway
decided to match the amount for a grand total of $2,380.98. Tom Haidon of
Hilton Head, S.C. had previously announced that he would not participate in
this weekend's activities but decided today that he would. Haidon won the
second Late Model Feature of the evening and said he was going to donate
his $750.00 in winnings to the fire fighters of New York City. Chris "the
Shark" Beach of Hardeeville, S.C., ran an extremely close second place to
Haidon in the feature and opted to donate his $400.00 second place monies
to the American Red Cross as well.

In the first Late Model feature of the evening, a make-up feature from an
August 18th rainout, Dusty Williams of Savannah, Ga. picked up the win over
Haidon and Skeeter Godbee of Sylvania, Ga. Tommy Porter, Jr. of Savannah,
Ga. has been absent from the last two weeks of action, but still had enough
points to clinch the 2001 Hardeeville Motor Speedway Late Model Track
Championship. The second Late Model feature found Haidon in victory after
battling with Williams for the entire race. Beach was able to sneak by
Williams at the end for second followed by Williams for third. Both Haidon
and Williams were first time winners at the Hardeeville Motor Speedway.

The Mini Stocks finished identically in both the make-up feature and the
regularly scheduled feature. Stephen Moore of St. George, S.C. won both
features followed by the 2001 HMS Mini Stock Track Champion, Mark Terry of
Rincon, Ga. Bluffton's Police Chief, Johnny Brown came across the stripe
in third.

The Xtreme Stock Cars were the only other division to have two features.
Don Dean of Sheldon, S.C. claimed both features of the evening. In the
first feature, Dean passed Chuck Johnson of Dublin, Ga. on lap 12. Johnson
finished second, followed by Ray Smith of Early Branch, S.C. Smith rubbed
fenders all the way to the finish line edging out the 2001 HMS Xtreme Stock
Car Track Champion, Tim Dasher from Bluffton, S.C. In the second feature
of the evening, Dean passed Dasher on lap 6 and never looked back. Scott
"the Problem Child" Thorne from Hardeeville, S.C. tried desperately to
track down Dean, but had to settle for second place. Smith once again
finished third as he swapped paint with just about every car in the race.

In Street Stock action, Glenn Mappus of Ridgeville, S.C. came home the
victor, but not before receiving challenges from second place finisher
Hubert Into of Bloomingdale, Ga. and third place finisher David Huggins of
Richmond Hill, Ga. Huggins is driving the car that his father Ellis won
the 2001 HMS Street Stock Track Championship with.

A full field of Legends Cars saw an early accident on the start of the race
collect five cars in turn 2. After the second restart of the race, Walter
Reardon of Savannah, Ga. jumped out to the early lead until he was spun by
Andy Logan from West Palm Beach, Fl. The second caution flag of the event
sent both Logan and Reardon to the rear of the field giving the lead to
Kevin O'Brien of Burton, S.C. O'Brien held the lead for two laps when
Garrett Shurling of Ellabell, Ga. passed him. Shurling attended a wedding
earlier in the evening and then hustled to the track changing from a tuxedo
to a driver's suit to barely make the feature event. Shurling held the
lead until Jonathan Haidon of Hilton Head, S.C. overtook him on lap 18 and
then immediately having mechanical problems and gave the lead back to
Shurling. Working his way through traffic, the 2001 HMS Semi Pro Track
Champion, Corey Fletcher of Bloomingdale, Ga. finally made it to the front
and grabbed the lead with five laps remaining. Shurling gave chase and
made a move at the end to finish second to Fletcher by less than a foot.
O'Brien came home third. Zack Tysinger of Hardeeville, S.C. and Wanda
Sondles of Johns Island, S.C. won their Young Lions and Lady Legends
feature respectively.

In the Spectacular Street Car race, David Lee of Statesboro, Ga. in a 2000
Honda Civic took home the $150.00 cash prize by defeating James Beckett of
Ridgeland, S.C. in the one-lap championship race. Beckett drove a 1985
Astro Van that ran like a Corvette.

Next weekend, the Thunder Roadsters will return to the Hardeeville Motor
Speedway for a Triple Crown event on Saturday Night, September 22nd. The
other divisions of racing featured will be the O.C. Welch
Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models, Legends Cars, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks,
and Xtreme Stock Cars.

Grandstands open at 5:00 p.m. The green flag waves at 7:05 p.m. for the
heat races and then followed by feature event racing for all divisions.
The Hardeeville Motor Speedway is located three miles southeast of I-95 on
Highway 17. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, with reduced rates for
seniors, military and children. Children under 12 years of age are
admitted free with a paying adult. Information is available at online at
