> Scores First Victory On Road Course > > Tulsa, OK - For the third consecutive year Indianapolis race driver Stephen Cox has visited victory lane, but Sunday's come-from-behind thriller at Tulsa's 1.7 mile Hallett Motor Racing Circuit marks the first time he has done so on a road course. After his Nissan fell behind with engine trouble on the first lap, Cox stormed from 8th place to take the checkered flag in GT-2 competition. > > Just like his top 15 run in the Hooters ProCup series three weeks ago, Cox had never sat in the car - let alone driven it - until the morning of the race. Nevertheless, the team ran 5th quick in the morning warm-up and went on to qualify on the second row of a 28 car field. > > After falling behind with engine gremlins Cox began to work his way through the field. "We were running out of laps. We were so far behind that there was no point in trying to save the car," Stephen explained. "The brakes quit on the last two laps and I had this monstrous oversteer because the rear tires were shot." > > Cox reeled in race leader larry Childs with four laps remaining. Childs, polesitter and GT-2 season champion, slid wide in Turn 11 and put two tires in the grass. Cox said "I knew that if I was going to win the race, I had to do it then. I drifted the car sideways through the turn and dove under him. I had used up the car and it was one of those 'now or never' things. I think I beat him out of the corner by maybe half a car length." > > Not only did Cox win the GT-2 race, he took his six cylinder Nissan into the top five of the V-8 powered GT-1 class. Stephen returns to the cockpit for another road race at Indianapolis Raceway Park in early October. > >
