NOTES OF INTEREST: The ARCA EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 100 will
follow Bud Pole Qualifying for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Thursday
night under the lights at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Former ARCA RE/MAX
Series champions’ Frank Kimmel (current point leader) and Tim Steele are
the only former LMS/ARCA winners entered in this year’s event. Steele is
the all-time LMS winner with 4 victories followed by Kimmel with 2.
Additional ARCA RE/MAX Series winners at LMS include Lyndon Amick, Mario
Gosselin, Gary Laton, Ryan Newman, Adam Petty, Kirk Shelmerdine, Mark
Thompson and Curtis Turner who won the inaugural event in 1964. However,
there would be a 32-year hiatus before the series would return in 1996.
Steele is also the all-time lap leader at LMS having led 381 laps in 7
races. Shane Hmiel, son of renowned Winston Cup crew chief Steve Hmiel,
unofficially posted the quickest speed in ARCA RE/MAX Series recent
testing at LMS. Hmiel, in a Ken Schrader Pontiac, checked in at 178.690
mph over 3-time champ Steele at 178.277. From the Sauter racing family,
Johnny Sauter is entered in the #19 Target Saws & Blades Chevy with an
assist from Richard Childress Racing. Kevin Harvick, who finished 2nd to
Kirk Shelmerdine at LMS in 99, was the last driver RCR groomed via the
ARCA RE/MAX Series ranks.
