KENNINGTON AND GIBBONS WIN QUALIFYING SPRINTS AT DELAWARE

Castrol Super Series // Round #12 // Qualifying Sprint Races // September
28, 2001
The Great Canadian Race Weekend // Delaware Speedway // London, ON

LONDON, ON - Following time trials to set the top two positions for
Sunday's 'Great Canadian Race', a pair of 100 lap qualifying sprint races
were held at Delaware Speedway on Friday night. In all, 26 Castrol Super
Series competitors were locked into the starting field for Sunday
afternoon's season finale.
Dave Whitlock, who has a pair of Super Series wins to his credit this
season, secured the pole for the 300 lap main event. Lining up alongside of
Whitlock's Motorcraft Ford Taurus will be two-time and defending Castrol
Cup champion Peter Gibbons.
Gibbons, of Stouffville, ON won the second 100 lap sprint race, after
leading every lap in his Canadian Tire Chevy. Finishing second to Gibbons
in the second heat was series points leader Don Thomson Jr., who will enter
Sunday's 'Great Canadian Race' with a 74-point lead over Kerry Micks. Al
Turner, who is 14 points back of Micks, was third in Sprint #2.
The first sprint race was a wild affair, which featured several lead
changes. DJ Kennington, driving the Castrol SYNTEC Intrepid with an engine
borrowed from Turner, emerged victorious after taking the lead from Mark
Dilley on lap 91. Dilley went on to finish second, ahead of Ron Beauchamp Jr.
Saturday afternoon at Delaware Speedway, the remainder of the starting
field for Sunday's race will be determined following the 'Final Qualifiers'
race.

RACE NOTES: CASCAR veteran Kelly Williams was involved in a scary incident
during time trials when the throttle on her Westburne Electric / AOL
Pontiac stuck open, sending her into the outside wall in turn 1. Williams
emerged unhurt from the crash and promptly returned home to Inglewood, ON
to begin to transform her road racing car over to an oval configuration for
Sunday's race.
