Pontiac Leads Runners Down New York's Famed Fifth Avenue
This Weekend's Pontiac 5th Avenue Mile Features Runners of all Ages and Abilities
New York, NY - Pontiac is the title sponsor of the 5th Avenue Mile, New York's premiere one-mile race, on Saturday, September 29th. Pontiac vehicles will act as pacesetters for each of the fifteen heats of this annual race, which began in 1981 and attracts approximately 1,300 competitors each year.
In addition to acting as the pacesetters of each of the heats of the race, a fleet of Pontiac vehicles will be used to shuttle elite athletes to and from the starting line, located on Fifth Avenue at 80th Street.
"Pontiac is proud to help bring runners of all ages and abilities together for the 5th Avenue Mile," said Kurt McNeil, Northeast regional divisional marketing manager for Pontiac. "We believe our participation in this annual New York event will continue to help bring the spirit of New Yorkers together as the relief efforts continue at Ground Zero."
Pontiac's activities extend beyond the competitors on race day. Pontiac will also be running a contest involving the spectators and fans of the race. A 2001 Pontiac Grand Am, with the trunk filled with stress balls, will be on display near the race's finish line on Fifth Avenue and 60th Street. The contestant who guesses the correct number of stress balls in the trunk will have $500 donated in their name to the World Trade Center disaster relief fund of their choice.
New York City Marathon
Pontiac is also in its second year as a Signature Sponsor and Official Vehicle of the New York City Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, November 4, 2001. As the Official Vehicle of the Marathon, Pontiac will be responsible for leading 30,000 runners through the five boroughs of New York City, and will award the male and female winners of the Marathon a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT. In addition, Pontiac will present the second annual Comeback Runner of the Year Award to two runners - one elite athlete and one recreational runner - who have come back from adversity to compete in the 2001 NYC Marathon. A donation in each of the names of the Comeback Runners of the Year will be made to the World Trade Center disaster relief fund of their choice.
