USAC: Alvis wins at Madera; Harris' Western point lead now 34

September 25, 2001Floyd Alvis of San Carlos, Calif. won Saturday night's 30-lap USAC WorldCom Western Midget Car feature at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway, leading the final 22 laps after passing Chuck Gurney, Jr. on lap nine. The victory was Alvis' second in USAC competition, having also won a Madera race in 1985!
Gurney led the first eight laps before yielding to Alvis' VanDyne/Stealth, then slipped to sixth at the finish. Fast qualifier Tony Hunt finished second ahead of Josh Wise, defending series champion Wally Pankratz and Rory Price.
Series point leader Danny Ebberts finished 20th, while points runner-up Alex Harris was 11th and now trails Ebberts by 34 points going into October 5-6 events at the Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway. Ebberts and Shane Scully won Saturday night's preliminary "qualifying races."
