Dana Corporation's Spicer Driveshaft Facility in Atkins, Virginia, Receives United States Senate Productivity and Quality Award
TOLEDO, Ohio, Sept. 21 Dana Corporation's Spicer Driveshaft Group facility in Atkins, Va., has been honored with the 2001 Medallion of Performance Excellence by the U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award (SPQA) for Virginia. The Medallion of Excellence is the highest state-level quality award given in Virginia. "Dana people at Atkins have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to excellence in advancing productivity and quality. "Their innovative ideas to enhance customer service and satisfaction, along with their dedication to the team environment have earned them this award." Management gave its commitment and support to the award application and employee involvement team members helped with the site visit, interviews, and facility tour to five judges who visited the facility in July. Atkins facility goals include personal involvement and innovation, and never accepting mediocrity. The facility utilizes cross-functional teams, such as customer satisfaction teams that deal with quality and delivery issues. Blitz teams have led efforts that have produced excellent customer-rating scores, quality and productivity improvements. The plant services over 100 customers, and through the team approach strives to exceed customer expectations in all areas. "This achievement, on top of Spicer Driveshaft's recent receipt of the 2000 Malcolm Baldrige Award, further reinforces our solid commitment to our customers for delivering excellence in quality, innovation and responsiveness," said Joe Sober, vice president and general manager of Spicer Driveshaft. The Atkins, Va., facility has been on this quest for excellence for the past four years, garnering the Commonwealth of Virginia's Certificate of Significant Achievement in 1998; the first year that the facility participated in the SPQA, and the Outstanding Achievement award in 1999. The SPQA Banquet is scheduled for October 11, 2001 at the Richmond Marriott. Sen. John Warner, Sen. George Allen, and Gov. James Gilmore are invited to present the awards.
