September 21, 2001Team Amick Motorsports announced today that it is putting its Busch racing team on indefinite hold and will focus entirely on engine development for other racing programs. Team Amick currently builds engines for three cars ranked in the top ten in driver points.
Lyndon Amick, who has been the driver for the Team Amick #35 car, said it was a difficult decision for the team. “Our engine development program is very successful. Team Amick will now concentrate solely on building the best, most competitive engines in NASCAR for our customers,” Amick said.
Fred West, director of human resources for Team Amick, said cancellation of the team’s Busch racing program represented a decision to put engine customers first. West said Team Amick’s manager, Bo Montgomery, has compiled a successful record in building engines for a growing number of winning teams, including three NASCAR teams currently ranked in the top ten.
Montgomery said his team was “excited” about their future potential in engine development. “Our goal is to build high horsepower designs that are the best, most competitive racing engines in NASCAR. To achieve that goal, we will limit ourselves next year to no more than six engine customers,” Montgomery said.
The team did not rule out the possibility of reactivating its racing program in the future. “At least for now, we will be focusing solely on our engine designs and our engine customers,” West said.
Lyndon Amick said he has not lost his love of racing or his desire to compete on the track. He said he may end up driving for a different team at some later date. “We had to do what was best for the team” he said.
