September 20, 2001STUART, VA - For this weekend's NASCAR Winston Cup race in Dover, Delaware, the #21 Elliott Sadler/Wood Brothers Motorcraft Taurus will proudly display an American Flag with the words "God Bless America" on the trunklid of the car.
According to Charles Kim, Motorsport Manager for Ford Customer Service Division, the decision to place this decal on the Motorcraft Taurus was made jointly by the team and sponsor in anticipation of the race at New Hampshire.
"After last week's tragedy in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, we wanted to show support for our team partner, the U.S. Air Force, and for America as we all start the recovery process from these terrorist attacks," said Kim. "Since last Tuesday, American flags have been showing up everywhere as a show of support...on homes, buildings, cars and trucks, overpasses, and through e-mail and the internet. We felt that our racecar should carry that great symbol too, as we return to racing in Dover."
Eddie and Len Wood, co-owners of the #21 added, "We are proud to show our patriotism by having the flag decal on our racecar. We want to remember all the families affected by the recent tragedy and encourage everyone to display their flags, also."
"The Air Force appreciates the thoughts and concerns of Motorcraft and Wood Brothers Racing. We join you in saluting and supporting our country." Air Force Chief of Staff, General John P. Jumper, said in response.
