September 19, 2001Hendrick Motorsports employees are giving $18,862 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief efforts this week, and employer HMS is matching all employee contributions to offer a total contribution of $37,724 in cash for relief activities in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
The employees of Hendrick Motorsports - which fields three teams in NASCAR's Winston Cup Series and two in the Craftsman Truck Series - started the fundraising Friday morning, gathering both money for the American Red Cross and non-perishables to be shipped to Washington, D.C. and New York City for the relief workers. What started as a simple gesture soon turned astounding as cash contributions climbed to $18,862. The 350 employees also donated enough canned goods, toiletries and paper items to fill four four-foot tall boxes.
"I have always known that the people at Hendrick Motorsports are the best there are, but their compassion for the victims, families and relief workers in last week's tragedies astounds even me," said Rick Hendrick, founder and CEO of Hendrick Motorsports.
Hendrick Motorsports, based in Harrisburg, N.C., also will feature "God Bless America" on the rear deck lids of its Winston Cup cars: the No. 5 Kellogg's Chevrolet, driven by Terry Labonte; the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet, driven by Jeff Gordon; and the No. 25 UAW-Delphi Chevrolet, driven by Jerry Nadeau. The No. 17 GMAC Chevrolet Silverado and No. 24 NetZero Chevrolet Silverado, piloted by Ricky Hendrick and Jack Sprague in the truck series, also will pay tribute to America.
