ASA Postpones Winchester 400

Fall Classic Rescheduled for September 23rd

Pendleton, Ind. (September 13, 2001) — Officials from the American Speed Association have announced that the 32nd Annual ASA ACDelco Series “Winchester 400” stock car event has been postponed in light of the tragic and unprecedented assault by terrorists T uesday morning and complications associated with the attack.

The Winchester 400 has been rescheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 22 and 23.

“The decision to postpone the Winchester 400 is the right decision, and the only decision,” commented ASA Vice-President of Sales and Marketing Mark Gundrum. “We’ve talked to our teams, we’ve talked to our fans, and we’ve talked to our families. Based upon the current state of affairs, the best place for all of us this weekend is at home, with our families!”

ASA originally announced on Wednesday that the event would go on as scheduled, but continued to monitor the situation as it pertained to further FAA and government information. The decision to postpone the event was made after much deliberation, taking int o account that the national transportation system remains at a virtual standstill.

“We began contemplating whether or not to postpone the Winchester 400, or alter the schedule for the weekend, within hours of the attack,” Gundrum continued. “We felt as though we needed to make a decision on Wednesday, or at least let our teams and fans know what our plans were at the time. And, at that time, our plans were to race.”

The schedule of events for the September 22-23 Winchester 400 weekend will be finalized and announced in the near future.
