Charity Broadens Fundraising Event to Benefit Those Affected by Terrorist Attacks
DALLAS--Sept. 13, 2001--Officials with the Steve Sanderson Charitable Foundation have announced that a portion of the funds raised during the John O'Hurley Celebrity Golf Invitational and Gala will be used to support those affected by the tragic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
The Foundation will continue to focus on fighting Alzheimer's Disease while also sending funds to the "Spirit Of America Relief Fund," which will benefit agencies committed to assisting those with immediate needs due to the American tragedy. The John O'Hurley Celebrity Golf Invitational and Gala will be held on September 24, 2001, at the Westin Stonebriar Resort and Country Club in Frisco, Texas.
Steve Sanderson, Chairman of the Steve Sanderson Charitable Foundation, said, "This Foundation was established to help families overcome terrible problems such as Alzheimer's Disease. We'll not back down from our commitment to eliminate Alzheimer's, but we felt compelled to also help those that need our immediate assistance. The Board of Directors and celebrities we've spoken to wholeheartedly support our decision to broaden the beneficiaries of this event. Our goal is to create a way for people to help their fellow Americans through this event."
John O'Hurley, best known as Seinfeld's "J. Peterman," and the Steve Sanderson Charitable Foundation have teamed up to host the event. The star-studded event will feature celebrities such as actors Patrick Swayze, Cheech Marin, and Dennis Haskins; entertainers Alice Cooper and Rudy Gatlin; and sports stars Spud Webb, Tom Sneva, Ed "Too Tall Jones" and Jim McMahon.
"We will not be deterred by terrorists," stated Mark Woolverton, Director of Development for the Alzheimer's Association of Dallas. "The Alzheimer's Association and Steve Sanderson Charitable Foundation realize we must cure Alzheimer's Disease. However, sometimes a more immediate need arises that affects everyone. This is an opportunity for Americans to meet both the needs of those stricken by this tragedy, while also helping battle the long term problem of Alzheimer's Disease."
The tournament will begin at about 7 AM at the Stonebriar Golf Course. The public can purchase tickets to watch the golf tournament and attend a black tie gala.
The gala, which begins at 6 PM on Monday night, will feature live entertainment, silent and live auctions, as well as dinner and entertainment. Jewelry, trips and autographed sports memorabilia are among the items to be auctioned off. Trips available at the auction include a 16 day cruise to South America, a gourmet celebrity dinner in John O'Hurley's LA home and an Alaskan fishing trip for two including personal jet transport. The musical group "Emerald City," as well as comedians Dick Hardwick and Kenny Bob Davis will provide entertainment. Money raised from the auction will go towards finding a cure for Alzheimer's and easing the pain of those already suffering from the disease.
One of the highest profile items to be auctioned at the gala is a new Series 1 roadster built by Shelby American. The Series 1 provides unparalleled performance that creates the experience of driving a racecar on the street. Each car is numbered and Series 1 production will be limited to only 500 vehicles in order to keep its investment value as high as possible.
The public can watch the tournament for $15 and attend the gala for $500 per couple. In addition there are a few players slots remaining. Tickets can be purchased via the group's Internet site (www.golf4alz.org) or by calling (800) 988-0994.
Superior Leasing, Bank One, Shelby American, WFAA, Genesis Intermedia, Park Place Dealerships and The Dallas Morning News are sponsoring the event. The gala will begin inside the Westin ballroom with cocktails and silent auction at 6 PM on Monday night after the tournament.
"Everyone can join the fight against those assailing our families," added Mr. Sanderson. "Businesses can be a sponsor, golfers can play in the tournament, people can attend the gala and fans can watch the celebrities play. Disease and disasters may test us, but by standing together we will overcome all of our adversaries."
