NASCAR's Dallenbach, Skinner to Test for Rolex 24 At Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 6, 2001) -- Two NASCAR Winston Cup drivers are expected to slide behind the wheel of a prototype sports car next week during the Grand American Road Racing Association's test days at Daytona International Speedway. Wally Dallenbach Jr. and Mike Skinner are expected to be at the track on Wednesday, Sept. 12, to test in Robinson Racing's 74-Ranch Judd-engined Riley & Scott for the 2002 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Robinson Racing runs in the premier SportsRacing Prototype class of the Rolex Sports Car Series. Team owner George Robinson, of Houston, and Jack Baldwin, of Atlanta, are the standard drivers for the 74-Ranch car, but the need for two additional drivers at the famous 24-hour race could be filled by Dallenbach and Skinner in 2002.

"I've known George Robinson for about 12 or 13 years now," Dallenbach told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. "We're good friends, and I gave him a call."

While Dallenbach's participation in the Rolex 24 appears to be a done deal, Skinner will not make his decision until after recording some laps behind the wheel of the powerful Riley & Scott.

Grand-Am will hold test days at Daytona on both Wednesday and Thursday, as a precursor to the Grand-Am Finale, Sept. 14-16. However, Robinson crew chief James Fraser said that Dallenbach and Skinner would only be testing with the team on Wednesday, due to obligations at next week's Winston Cup race in Loudon, N.H.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona will be held at Daytona International Speedway, February 2-3, 2002.
