Bandag Distribution Subsidiary Names New President

MUSCATINE, Iowa, Sept. 7 Bandag, Incorporated announced today that John
McErlane, 48, has been named vice president of Bandag, Incorporated and
president of the corporation's distribution subsidiary, Tire Distribution
Systems, Inc. (TDS).

Mr. McErlane had been vice president, marketing and sales, and served on
Bandag's executive leadership team, reporting to Martin Carver, Chairman and
CEO. He will continue to report to Mr. Carver in his new role.

With net sales in 2000 of more than $400 million, TDS owns and operates
103 tire sales, service and retreading locations in 17 states throughout the
United States, and primarily serves truck fleet customers and owner-operators
of medium and heavy duty trucks.

The appointment of Mr. McErlane, a 16-year veteran of Bandag, ends a
six-month search for a new president of TDS. Commenting on the new president,
Mr. Carver said, "We interviewed several very strong candidates and John is
the right person at the right time for TDS. His background in the trucking
industry before joining Bandag, and his experience here with managing our
innovation and value delivery teams, will be put to good use in guiding TDS
forward. John understands the tire industry and he understands our vision and
value proposition extremely well."

Mr. McErlane sized up the new opportunity by saying that the importance of
TDS is growing every day. He said, "Thousands of Bandag fleet customers
across the country count on the strength of the Bandag distribution network to
deliver Bandag programs, services, information and products every day. TDS is
a very important part of Bandag's alliance of dealers, providing coverage and
capabilities in various markets from Anchorage to Atlanta. I'm very excited
and confident about our ability to profitably deliver a unique package of
value to our fleet customers."

Mr. McErlane served Bandag in sales, product and marketing management
positions before being named vice president, marketing in 1997. In 1998 he
was elected vice president marketing and sales. Prior to joining Bandag, Mr.
McErlane worked for three national trucking companies, specializing in vehicle
engineering and maintenance. He is a graduate of North Dakota State
University with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.
