PPG Sheet Selected by National Geographic Maps for Waterproof Inkjet Maps

Asset Caption: WATERPROOF MAPS can now be printed with inkjet printers on a new Teslin synthetic sheet by PPG Industries. Robin Hunt, PPG market development manager, Teslin products, shows how the specially formulated proprietary silica-based sheet captures and holds the aqueous dye-based ink on maps printed with National Geographic Maps TOPO! Digital mapping software. Marketed by National Geographic Maps as Adventure Paper, Teslin IJ 1000 WP sheet by PPG for inkjet waterproof printing is sold in boxes of 25 sheets, 8 1/2 by 11 inches, alongside TOPO! software in outdoor retail stores. Teslin IJ 1000 WP sheet can be used for other inkjet printing applications where water resistance is needed, and also is available from paper distributors in large-format sheets and rolls for commercial printing.

CHICAGO--Sept. 6, 2001--A new synthetic printing sheet from PPG Industries for waterproof inkjet printing has been selected by National Geographic Maps for use with its TOPO! Digital mapping software.
Attendees at Print 01, sponsored by the Graphic Arts Show Company, are among the first to see new Teslin IJ 1000 WP sheet by PPG for water-resistant inkjet printing. PPG is printing maps on the new formulation Teslin sheet at exhibit booth 11019 during the trade show, being held through Sept. 13 at McCormick Place, Chicago. Print 01 is the largest and most comprehensive trade show this year for graphic design, digital prepress, printing, publishing and converting technology.
National Geographic Maps has been using PPG's standard Teslin sheet for laser-printed maps made at Map Machine kiosks located at outdoor retail outlets nationwide, according to Mike Dyer, director of retail services for National Geographic Maps Technology Group, based in San Francisco.
"With the growing popularity of our large-format waterproof, tear-resistant maps, many consumers began inquiring about how to duplicate the same quality and capabilities using TOPO! software at home," Dyer said.
"Customers wanted to be able to reproduce at home what they described as `the beautiful images' achieved at our Map Machine kiosks," Dyer said. "They wanted to be able to print on a high-quality, waterproof and tear-resistant material using our software."
Dyer went back to PPG and found that the chemicals maker already was working on a Teslin sheet for waterproof inkjet printing.
National Geographic Maps conducted comparison testing at its San Francisco offices and in the "real world," selecting Teslin sheet over a competitive product because, according to Dyer, it was "the best."
"In conditions encountered from surfing to kayaking, backpacking to desert treks and skiing, maps printed on Teslin sheet outperformed the competition," Dyer said.
The PPG synthetic sheet outperformed the competition in its ability to resist water, abrasion, extreme temperatures and ultraviolet degradation, Dyer said.
"It even withstood being buried in snow," he said. "Time after time, the PPG material came out the winner."
Because of its association with National Geographic Maps, the printing medium selected had to be "the highest quality material" for use with the TOPO! software, he added. "PPG's Teslin sheet was clearly the best product."
Robin Hunt, PPG market development manager, Teslin products, said PPG stepped up development to introduce the product in time for National Geographic Maps to make it available to outdoor retail outlets at the Outdoor Retailer trade show in mid-August.
"We developed a proprietary formulation that captures and holds aqueous dye-based inks so that pieces printed on Teslin IJ 1000 WP sheet become waterproof," Hunt said.
Teslin sheet is a unique silica-polymer synthetic printing material that prints like paper, yet is durable and waterproof.
Unlike multilayer synthetic printing materials, Teslin sheet, including new Teslin IJ 1000 WP sheet, is a single layer. "The ink penetrates Teslin sheet and won't scratch off," Hunt added.
Marketed by National Geographic Maps as Adventure Paper, Teslin IJ 1000 WP sheet for waterproof inkjet printing is being sold in 8 1/2-by-11-inch sheets in boxes of 25 sheets alongside TOPO! software in outdoor retail stores.
It also is available in large sheets for wide-format printing of outdoor signs, banners, display materials and other graphic images, and can be printed on both sides.

Pittsburgh-based PPG is a global supplier of specialty and industrial chemicals, coatings, fiber glass and glass, with 120 manufacturing locations worldwide. Sales in 2000 were US$8.6 billion.
