Sensoria Corporation Brings IBM Embedded Java(TM) Technology and OSGi to Remote Gateway Devices
New Relationship Complements Sensoria Telematics Environment LA JOLLA, Calif., Sept. 6 Sensoria Corporation, a leader in wireless connectivity solutions announced today at DEMOmobile 2001 in La Jolla, Calif. a strategic association with IBM to execute Open Services Gateway Initiative (OSGi) standards for delivering Java applications to remote gateway devices in vehicles, homes and industrial equipment. The relationship provides Sensoria with VisualAge(TM) Micro Edition development tools and J9(TM), J2ME "Java Powered" Java compatible class libraries, custom class libraries, IBM's best-in-class embedded virtual machine technology and OSGi frameworks. Sensoria will perform gateway platform integration for customers interested in IBM's technology. This delivers an advanced operating environment for applications and services delivered to remote gateways in vehicles, homes and factory environments. Embedded computing platforms are often resource constrained, requiring great engineering attention to memory, power and heat related parameters. Sensoria and IBM's expertise in software for embedded systems has resulted in the powerful integration of gateway platforms with Java technology designed from the start for embedded deployment. OSGi is an industry consortium of 85 companies collaborating to define specifications for how to use the Java programming language to simplify the process of developing applications for limited memory devices and resource constrained clients. The specifications give a framework for writing code for managed devices that are continuously running. Applications get swapped in and out, are updated on the fly, and communicate dependably with other applications. "As a result of this partnership, it will be easier for independent software vendors to develop and deploy Java-based applications on a variety of remote gateways," says Dave Gelvin, president and CEO of Sensoria Corporation. "IBM's easy to use VisualAge Micro Edition cross-platform development environment enables third parties to quickly and easily develop and deliver innovative applications and services to our platforms." "Sensoria's abstraction technology makes it easy for the service providers to securely manage application and service delivery to a variety of platforms without worrying about the complexities of the ever-changing wireless infrastraucture," explains Skip McGaughey, director of the IBM embedded systems group. "Their integration of our J9 virtual machine and the SMF OSGi framework will further simplify application integration with remote gateway platforms." IBM's Java technology is long recognized by the industry as robust, fast, scaleable and stable. As proof of this leadership, all four high volume distributors of Linux recently chose to ship IBM's Developers Kit for Linux, Java Technology Edition, with their products. IBM's virtual machine implementations are rated the highest performing and most scaleable by industry benchmarks like VolanoMark and SpecJVM98. VisualAge Micro Edition and the J9 virtual machine now extend this great technology lineup to embedded platforms. The Sensoria Telematics Environment is a standards-based platform for delivering next-generation telematics services over conventional cellular, Bluetooth and wireless LAN connections. It enables telematics service providers to quickly and easily deploy new voice and data applications remotely to in-vehicle information systems. It consists of three components: the Telematics Communication Server, the Telematics Client Platform software, and the mGate Modular Vehicle Gateway. Sensoria has simplified the complexities of wireless and proprietary vehicle interfaces into a common set of APIs and web-based interfaces to support third-party software development for the Sensoria Telematics Environment. About Sensoria Corporation Sensoria Corporation is a leader in wireless and wire-line connectivity solutions that network the systems embedded in vehicles, homes and industry with the Internet.
