SimpleDevices to Unveil After-Market SimpleAuto(TM) Digital Audio Receiver At DEMOmobile 2001

Unique SimpleAuto Product Connects Wirelessly and Holds Hundreds of Hours Of
Customizable Digital Audio for the Car

LA JOLLA, Calif., Sept. 5 At today's opening of the
DEMOmobile conference, SimpleDevices, providers of a multi-device integrated
platform for delivering rich content and applications beyond the PC, unveiled
its newest reference design, the after-market version of its SimpleAuto
wireless digital audio receiver for the automobile.
SimpleDevices and one of its OEM partners, Motorola, Inc.'s
Broadband Communications Sector, share a commitment to developing
user-friendly, smart devices for the home and beyond that leverage broadband
connectivity to deliver next-generation entertainment benefits to consumers.
SimpleDevices is delivering on that promise with the after-market version of
SimpleAuto-an easy-to-use, affordable digital audio receiver that connects
wirelessly to a consumer's PC or set-top box and stores hundreds of hours of
MP3 music, Internet radio, syndicated programming, audio books and
personalized packages of audio information updates. Now, it's possible for
consumers to access their entire audio collection in the car and to create a
customized package of optional information services or audio books for a daily
commute, a roadtrip or anytime. For example, they can choose to spend their
daily commute listening to weather, horoscope, national news, local traffic
and syndicated programming (such as Car Talk or Fresh Air). Or they can
download any of thousands of audio books for playback in the car.
Once the SimpleAuto unit is installed in the car-installation is similar
to after-market CD-changer players currently on the market-consumers instantly
have access to the vast array of digital music and other audio programming
available today. The product consists of a trunk-mounted media storage
transceiver that automatically, wirelessly connects to SimpleDevices'
SimpleServe(TM) software that resides on the user's PC, storage gateway or
set-top terminal, via Motorola's home networking technology and other
networking protocols, then caches chosen content for access in the car. The
modular design allows for the media storage cartridge to be removed, and when
connected to the optional faceplate accessory, transforms the unit into a
portable compressed audio player. The second element is a tethered remote
control, used within the car to access and control the device. The remote
control features track, channel, and playlist displays and control, and is
equipped with the SimpleDevices' signature TagIt function for interacting with
favorite songs and audio content at the PC.
"SimpleDevices could lead an important new category of applications that
give consumers and other users access to subscription-based music and other
forms of digital content or services. We chose SimpleDevices for DEMOmobile
2001 because it's one of the most innovative software platforms we've seen for
delivering digital media to consumers," said Jim Forbes, editor of DEMOLetter
and co-producer of DEMOmobile.
This new product concept follows SimpleDevices' recent announcement of a
commercial agreement with Motorola, an investor in SimpleDevices, to market
and distribute its SimpleFi(TM) product to consumers later this year. Both
SimpleFi, a wireless digital audio receiver for home stereo systems, and
SimpleAuto were built to leverage SimpleDevices' interactive platform for
delivering content beyond the PC to devices throughout the home and in the
car, to provide entertainment and information to consumers where they live.
"Motorola chose to work with SimpleDevices because SimpleDevices' software
platform strategy is perfectly aligned with Motorola's vision for delivering
compelling content beyond the PC to the customized places where people want to
experience it," said Vince Izzo, director of home networking for Motorola
Broadband. "Innovative applications that excite and stimulate customers-like
SimpleAuto-are the key to bridging the gap between the PC and appliances and
entertainment systems consumers use in their daily lives. These are the kinds
of applications that will drive broadband growth and drive home networking
from a productivity-centric technology to one that provides a full suite of
benefits -- i.e., efficiency, communication and entertainment-to consumers
wherever they go, whether they're at home, at work, at play, or in the car."
A recent report from Forrester Research indicates that 84 million people
drive alone to work daily, and that by 2003, 12 million cars on US roads will
contain next generation in-car entertainment systems. The time spent alone in
cars equals 500 million hours a week and 26 billion hours annually-an enormous
market opportunity.
"SimpleAuto is a one-of-a-kind, exciting new product that will give
consumers a level of control and customization never before possible in the
car," said Craig Janik, co-founder and CTO of SimpleDevices. "And because of
our platform approach, it integrates with our other products, including the
SimpleFi, digital audio receiver for the home stereo that will be available to
consumers later this year. These products are going to change the way people
get their entertainment, in the home and in the car."
Powering SimpleAuto, SimpleDevices' platform provides content and
applications distribution, web-based content management and device
interactivity. It includes software in three domains: on the PC or storage
gateway, the device, and at the service provider head-end. SimpleWare(TM) is
SimpleDevices' networking software for distributing digital content and
applications from a gateway to enabled devices beyond the PC. SimpleMedia(TM)
is an application that allows network service providers to deliver, manage and
monetize content from a range of third-party providers. SimpleDevices'
platform is powerful enough for enterprise customers and flexible enough for
home users.

    About SimpleDevices
Founded in 1999, SimpleDevices has developed an integrated software
platform for delivering customizable, premium digital content beyond the PC to
a variety of wireless devices for the home, automobile and enterprise. The
platform, centered around the SimpleWare device-networking software, allows
consumer electronics OEMs to develop a new class of connected products such as
stereos, automobiles, and PDAs that leverage an Internet-connected PC or
gateway. SimpleDevices enables Network Service Providers to deliver and
monetize digital media to their subscribers through its SimpleMedia
application. SimpleMedia includes third party, branded, integrated content at
the network head-end to enable the service provider to create recurring
revenue for interactive services delivered to devices beyond the PC. Content
providers can enable their content to work with the SimpleDevices platform by
using the SimpleCast(TM) integration tools. Located in Burlingame,
California, SimpleDevices has received investments from Motorola, Proxim, and
Casio, and is currently in the process of closing its Series B round of
funding.
