DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 4 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), with the support of the Detroit 300 Commission, will recognize and honor 50 manufacturing companies with facilities that have achieved a heritage of more than 50 years in Michigan. The SME/Detroit 300 Manufacturing Awards Breakfast, "A Michigan Manufacturing Tradition," will be held 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at Detroit's Cobo Center, Riverview Ballroom. Remarks by the Honorable Dennis Archer, Mayor, City of Detroit and by Michael A. Finney, vice president, Emerging Business Sectors, Michigan Economic Development Commission, will be followed by a presentation of awards by Edsel Ford II, chairman of the Detroit 300 Commission. Honorees range from Michigan's oldest manufacturer and distributor of woodcutting and metal-cutting tools, PMC Machinery (established in 1854), to American Axle & Manufacturing, DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Federal Mogul Corporation, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation and Lear Corporation. "These companies are the heart and soul of Michigan's manufacturing community," said Nancy S. Berg, SME executive director and general manager and host of the breakfast. "SME's mission is to support the future of manufacturing and its important role in the economy. This awards breakfast allows us to acknowledge and promote Michigan's leadership in manufacturing while honoring businesses that have demonstrated their commitment to the state's technological advancements and economic growth." The Manufacturing Awards Breakfast will be attended by the senior executives of the manufacturing companies being honored; Detroit 300 Commission members; SME members; local media; and the nearly 400 exhibitors in SME's concurrent machine-tool exposition, the Detroit 2001 Advanced Productivity Exposition (APEX). A limited number of tickets are available for purchase at $50 each by other interested parties. A percentage of the ticket revenues will be given to the SME Education Foundation's scholarships and grant programs, which support manufacturing engineering programs at Michigan colleges and universities. In 2001, the SME Education Foundation will invest over $430,000 in Michigan grants and $58,000 in Michigan scholarships. Immediately following the Manufacturing Awards Breakfast, the doors will open to SME's Detroit 2001 Advanced Productivity Exposition (APEX), being held at Cobo Center September 25 to 27.
