Roadway Express Drivers Earn Top Honors at National Truck Driving Championships

    AKRON, Ohio--Sept. 4, 2001--This year Roadway Express, Inc. sent 38 professional drivers to the National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) held August 22-25 in Minneapolis, Minn. One of the top winners, David McDonald, a Roadway linehaul driver domiciled in Kansas City, MO, won National Champion honors in the Twin Class. He has logged 3.6 million safe miles without an accident.
    In addition, Gary Ott, a pickup and delivery driver for Roadway working out of the Billings, MT, facility earned the "Vehicle Condition Award," presented by Julie Anna Cirillo, Acting Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The award honors the driver with the best "Pre-Trip Inspection" score.

    Roadway's other top finishers were:

    James DePouw, Green Bay, Wisconsin, second place, Tanker Class
    John Larson, Kansas City, Kansas, second place, Straight Truck Class
    Bruce Amor, South Bend, Indiana, third place, Sleeper Class
    William MacDonald, Bellows Falls, Vermont, third place, 3-Axel Class

    The National Truck Driving Championships, sponsored by the American Trucking Associations, are an opportunity for professional truck drivers to demonstrate their driving skills and professionalism. The event includes difficult driving skills and maneuvering test, pre-trip inspections, a personal interview and a written examination covering vehicle operation and federal safety regulations.
