TURNER WINS IN VANCOUVER
Castrol Super Series // Round #11 // Molson Indy Vancouver
September 1, 2001 // Concord Pacific Place // Vancouver, BC
VANCOUVER, BC - Castrol Super Series veteran Al Turner started on the pole
and won today's 29-lap race at the Molson Indy Vancouver, in front of a
crowd of 51,243 racing fans. At the initial green flag, Kevin Dowler - who
started on the outside of the front row in his Ford Quality Care Taurus -
jumped to the lead and showed the way for the first eight laps of the
inaugural Vancouver outing for the CASCAR Late Models.
Turner stayed close to the Edmonton, AB racer, and as they entered the
first turn on lap 9, Turner grabbed the inside line - under braking - and
was able to put his Blue Streak Intrepid into the lead. The Barrie, ON
driver survived several attempts by Dowler to recover the lead and took the
checkered flag, under the third race caution of the afternoon, to win his
second race of the Castrol Super Series season and his second career series
road course victory. Turner also won the inaugural Edmonton CASCAR event,
in the mid-'90s.
Finishing third, behind Turner and Dowler, was former Super Series
champion Kerry Micks, of Mt. Albert, ON. Driving the TIM-BR Mart Ford
Taurus, Micks advanced from sixth at the start and closed on series' points
leader Don Thomson in the chase for the Castrol Cup. Thomson's Home
Hardware Chevy was involved in an incident on the opening lap, which sent
him to the back of the pack. The Hamilton, ON driver recovered to seventh
at the finish, in the 30-car field.
With one Castrol Super Series race remaining, at the end of September at
Delaware Speedway, Thomson has 1794 points, to Micks' 1728. Vancouver race
winner Turner sits third with 1708.
