UAW President Stephen P. Yokich Statement On President Bush's Labor Day Visit to Detroit
DETROIT, Aug. 30 Statement from UAW President Stephen P. Yokich on President Bush's Labor Day visit to Detroit: We're surprised that President Bush even celebrates Labor Day given his obvious hostility toward America's working families and their unions. Mr. Bush's political strategists may think that a few nice words at a carefully staged media event at a local union hall in Detroit on Labor Day will fool working families into thinking that Bush is on our side; it won't. Actions speak louder than words, and on issue after issue President Bush's actions have told America's working families that we don't count. From killing the new ergonomics standard, to his tax cut for millionaires, to his scheme to privatize Social Security, to opposing the inclusion of workers' rights and environmental protections in core trade agreements, to opening up the Alaska wilderness and the Great Lakes to Big Oil -- Bush has consistently put the selfish interests of his big money contributors in Corporate America ahead of the common interests of America's working families. Last November, union members in Michigan saw through Bush and rejected him and his anti-working family agenda by an overwhelming 2-to-1 margin. It's going to take more than a Labor Day photo-op in the Motor City to change our minds.
