Johnson Matthey First to Receive EPA and ARB Verification for Its Award-Winning CRT(R) Particulate Filter
MALVERN, Pa., Aug. 30 Diesel pollution from trucks and buses on U.S. highways and roads is a problem recognized by everyone. There's also worldwide recognition that Johnson Matthey's Continuously Regenerating Technology, or CRT(R) Particulate Filter, is a highly-effective solution for controlling diesel emissions... and now there is EPA and ARB verification to prove it. The winner of the Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award, Britain's most prestigious award for engineering innovation and societal benefit, Johnson Matthey's CRT Particulate Filter was verified by the EPA on November 16, 2000 and was the first filter verified for the EPA's Voluntary Retrofit Program. The EPA verification is applicable to all two- and four- stroke on-road engines. And now, the CRT filter has been verified by the California Air Resources Board (ARB). One of the first filters to receive verification from ARB for use in its mandatory diesel risk reduction program, the CRT filter is currently verified for DDC Series 50 and 60 engines. With an expanding market for filter retrofits on all types of engines, Johnson Matthey is aggressively securing verification for all other diesel engine makes and models. Leading the market in the reduction of emissions, the CRT filter removes virtually all of the particulate matter (PM) from a wide range of diesel engines. In fact, through the patented combination of a platinum-based pre- catalyst and a filter element, the CRT filter reduces PM, as well as CO and HC (including toxics), by more than 90% and continues to do so for hundreds of thousands of miles, proving itself to be the most durable filter available. With more than 20,000 CRT filters in use worldwide having accumulated more than a billion miles of service, the CRT filter is the most widely-used filter for controlling particulate matter from heavy-duty diesel engines. And now with EPA and ARB approval, Johnson Matthey is rapidly extending the use of the CRT filter into the many commercial industries that use diesel engines. Through demonstration programs in various locations, California, Oregon, Washington, NY, Massachusetts and Washington, DC to name a few, Johnson Matthey continues to demonstrate the CRT filter's unique ability to consistently reduce emissions across a broad range of engines and applications and do so with outstanding durability. And once demonstrated, the proven -- and exceptional -- performance of the CRT filter makes Johnson Matthey the natural choice for diesel emission control. One example is MTA NYC Transit. Johnson Matthey successfully demonstrated the capabilities of the CRT filter (see SAE paper 2001-01-0511 for details), and helped MTA NYCT to develop a compelling story to enable them to retrofit their entire bus fleet with particulate filters and ULSD fuel. And with Johnson Matthey's commitment to customer service and competitive pricing, Johnson Matthey has become the prime supplier of filter technology to MTA NYCT, the country's largest public transit fleet. Not content to rest on its past achievements, Johnson Matthey is continuing its development efforts for extending the capabilities of its CRT filter to a broader range of engines and applications as well as combining it with NOx reduction technologies for a world class 4-way emission control device. In cooperation with various OE engine manufacturers, the CRT filter is well positioned for both retrofit applications and the 2007 HDD PM standard. Traded on the London Stock Exchange, Johnson Matthey is a 184 year old, highly diversified global technology firm with sales in excess of $6 billion. As part of Johnson Matthey's Catalytic Systems Division, the world's largest supplier of catalysts for the automotive industry, the Diesel Emission Control Systems group has been providing cost effective catalytic solutions for the worldwide light- and heavy-duty diesel markets for over 20 years.
