American Axle & Manufacturing Announces World Headquarters In Detroit

DETROIT, Aug. 29 American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings,
Inc. (AAM), which is traded as AXL on the NYSE, today announced that it will
build its new world headquarters in the city of Detroit.

The local award-winning architectural and engineering firm,
Luckenbach/Ziegelman, designed the new 202,000 square-foot, seven-story
headquarters that will be located on a 19-acre industrial campus at the
northeast corner of Holbrook and 1-75. The new multi-million dollar
headquarters will feature underground parking as well as a two-story parking
structure adjacent to the building.

Once it is completed, the new headquarters will house approximately
500 AAM associates and allow AAM to consolidate many corporate departments
under one roof. Three hundred corporate administrative personnel and
executives, whose offices are now scattered among several locations on the
headquarters' campus, will be relocated to the new building. An additional
100-200 people will be transferred to the Detroit headquarters from other
locations in Michigan.

When AAM Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO Richard E. Dauch joined with two
investors to purchase the assets of what would become American Axle &
Manufacturing from General Motors Corporation in 1994, they committed to
rebuilding and revitalizing not only the manufacturing facilities but also
surrounding areas.

Concurrent with rebuilding the manufacturing facilities and installing
state-of-the-art equipment, AAM, with the cooperation and support of the city
of Detroit and the state of Michigan, also focused on the infrastructure of
the surrounding areas. Abandoned houses and run-down buildings were purchased
and torn down, and roads, sewers, sidewalks and lighting were improved. The
result was the creation of a 174-acre industrial campus that includes an
extensive greenbelt.

"We focused on creating modern manufacturing facilities and producing a
safe and productive working environment for our associates," says Dauch. "We
are proud to say that in 1994 we were the first multibillion-dollar company to
locate its headquarters in the city of Detroit in more than 20 years, and as
we pursue our strategy of selective global growth, we have elected to remain
headquartered in Detroit.

"Detroit has proven to be an excellent home base for our worldwide
operations," Dauch continues. "Our global growth has brought new business and
new jobs to AAM's worldwide facilities, the state of Michigan and the city of
Detroit. Now, with the cooperation and assistance of the state of Michigan
and the city of Detroit we are proud to build our world headquarters in the
city and state that are synonymous with the automotive industry."

Groundbreaking for the new headquarters is planned for April 2002.
Completion and full occupancy of the new building is slated for the fourth
quarter 2003.
