Veteran driver looking for first win since March
JENNERSTOWN, Penn. (August 25, 2001) – Veteran ASA ACDelco Series driver Mike Garvey surprised many, including himself, capturing his third consecutive pole, knocking three-time ASA National Champion Butch Miller off the pole for Sunday’s Pennsylvania 300 at Jennerstown Speedway. It was Garvey’s 12th career pole.
“It was really a surprise. It helped us that we drew a late (qualifying) number,” said Garvey, who turned the half-mile oval in 19.008 sec. (98.864 mph). These engines really run better later in the day. We didn’t really run all that great today. We just k ept throwing things at it and throwing things at it and finally found something that worked.
“I love racing here. I used to like high-banked tracks. For some reason though, we are doing better now on the flat tracks. Qualifying and racing are defiantly two different animals here.”
Miller just missed capturing his seventh pole of the year, turning in a lap of 19.068 sec. (98.553 mph).
“I thought our time would hold up,” said Miller. “Normally you put your foot to the gas and hope for the best and you say you had a little left in the car. Today if I gave it anymore, I would have been in the wall. It was a good run for us.
Garvey’s teammate, Kevin Cywinski, will start right behind his teammate in the third position.
“I knew Butch and Mike would be tough,” said Cywinski. “When St. Amant and Cope put up those laps times, I hoped the track was getting quicker. I knew those times would be tough to beat. We have been working closely with Mike and his team, with testing and all. And to be starting one and three is good for the whole team.”
Gary St. Amant and Tim Ice will start fourth and fifth respectively. Ricky Bryant, Mike Cope, Tim Taylor, Chad Wood and Johnny Sauter round out the top-10. Prospect’s Ryan Hemphill will start 12th.
Activities for the Pennsylvania 300 begin on Sunday at 10 a.m. with spectator gates opening and the on track autograph session starting at 11. The green is set to drop on the race at 1 p.m.
