Autoliv Relocates Labor Intensive Manufacturing

    STOCKHOLM, Sweden--Aug. 22, 2001--Autoliv Inc. (Stockholm Stock Exchange: ALIV.) today announced that it has started compulsory negotiations with the local trade union at its plant in Kungalv, Sweden, to move most of its Swedish airbag cushion cut and sew operations from Kungalv to its existing plant in Olawa in Poland.
    Last week, Autoliv announced that similar production in the US, which has 500 employees, will be moved to Mexico. The Swedish textile operations currently employ just over 100 people. Non-production functions such as product development will remain in Sweden. The planned move is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
    The plans to move the Swedish and US textile operations are part of Autoliv's previously announced cost efficiency program. So far this year, the company has moved more than 1,000 jobs to low cost countries. In total, Autoliv has 30,000 employees in 30 car-producing countries at 80 facilities.
