PPG Official Provider of Paint, Glass for Heinz Field
PITTSBURGH--Aug. 21, 2001--PPG Industries today reached an agreement to be the official provider of paint and glass for Heinz Field, new home of the Pittsburgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh football teams. Terms were not disclosed.Heinz Field was constructed with 20,000 gallons of paint and 50,000 square feet of glass from PPG, one of the world's largest suppliers of coatings and North America's No. 1 manufacturer of glass.
"Heinz Field is a wonderful showroom for our technologies," said Benjamin R. Fisher Jr., PPG vice president of corporate marketing and communications. "Virtually everywhere you look you can see our products. From the paint in the luxury boxes, vending areas and locker rooms and on the structural steel, to the windows and glass walls, fans can see it's PPG that helps make Heinz Field sparkle."
Five paint products from PPG were used in the construction project, including Duranar industrial coatings, manufactured at the company's Springdale, Pa., plant. These coatings were used on louvers and roof and metal panels throughout the facility.
Solarban 60 coated glass, manufactured at PPG's Carlisle, Pa., plant, was used to make two highly distinctive, three-story, 200-foot long glass walls on opposite sides of the stadium. The same product was used in the 127 suites that overlook Heinz Field, which is situated on the North Shore across from downtown Pittsburgh and PPG's world headquarters.
"Our roots run deep in Western Pennsylvania," Fisher said of PPG, which was established in 1883, becoming the first commercially successful plate glass manufacturer in North America. "Our first plant was in Creighton -- about 20 miles up the Allegheny River from the new stadium -- and we continue to manufacture there today. Establishing a partnership with two other Pittsburgh institutions, the Steelers and Panthers, is not only a good investment in our future, but in our headquarters community as well."
In addition to being the official provider of paint and glass, PPG will donate $500 to the charity designated by the fan at each game who finds a special sticker on the PPG advertisement page in the Steelers' program. Also, PPG will give away Pitt football tickets to students and young people from a variety of local schools and organizations.
Pittsburgh-based PPG is a global supplier of coatings, glass, fiber glass and chemicals, with 120 manufacturing locations worldwide. Sales in 2000 were US$8.6 billion.
