Military Invites Industry to Meet at OAI
CLEVELAND, Aug. 20 OAI, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) will host the second Industry Day Workshop on September 27 at 22800 Cedar Point Road in Cleveland. Industry representatives from the Midwest are encouraged to attend the one-day workshop to gain an understanding of how to collaborate on shared-risk/shared-benefits projects within the Air Force Dual Use Science and Technology (DUS&T) program. Implemented in 1997, DUS&T has initiated 122 projects with a total value of $338 million. The program was developed so that industry executives, technical managers, engineers, and universities could network with Air Force scientists and engineers on aerospace-related technologies needed for military and commercial use. Currently, DUS&T has identified 11 presolicitation focus areas for its fiscal year 2003 funding. The technology areas to be explored at OAI include turbine engine technology, information technology, space vehicles, power technology, and composite fabrication and design. The Industry Day Workshop will provide attendees with one-on-one opportunities to meet with AFRL representatives in these areas of mutual interest. Participants will be able to assess their potential for subsequent competitive proposal submissions and funding for March 2003. "The workshop will serve as a catalyst for initiating discussions that would otherwise be more time-consuming by industry representatives outside the United States government," says Wally Rakowski, Director, Collaborative Research, OAI. "OAI's role is to help facilitate teaming and identify mutual interests among the military and industry so that they can work together to develop technologies that meet commercial and defense needs," adds Rakowski. The workshop's morning session will begin with a DUS&T overview by Dan Petonito, Office of Secretary of Defense, and a panel discussion of both industry and government participants in awarded DUS&T projects. A question and answer session will follow. The afternoon is designed for one-on-one discussions with AFRL scientists and engineers on technology focus areas of interest to AFRL. Prior Industry Day participants include The Goodrich Corporation, Smiths Aerospace, Rolls-Royce Corporation/AADC (Allison Advanced Development Corporation), Aircraft Braking Systems Corporation, Lubrizol Corporation, and MTL Systems. The Industry Day Workshop includes breakfast, lunch, and materials. Registration is $25 for attendees before September 14 and $35 thereafter. Founded in 1989, OAI brings industry, academia, and government together in collaborative efforts to develop market-driven technology solutions. These partnerships have generated more than 100 collaborative activities generating more than $140 million in funding.
