August 20, 2001In the opening round Jeg Coughlin faced of against Brad Jeter. The match up put a Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Grand Am head-to-head.
Lane choice went to Jeter and he rolled into the left lane. The two drivers both turned their pre stage light on and waited on the other to roll the rest of the way in. Jeter went in first and Jeg slowly followed.
The Jeg's Chevy Cavalier launched from the line first by .016 seconds (.435 to .451). The two cars were side-by-side with Jeg out in front until the 1000-foot clock. Jeter slowly pulled ahead. The win went to Jeter by .0064 seconds at the stripe. Jeg ran a 7.005 at 196.93 mph.
"That was a close one. I knew I was out in front at 1000 feet. We just ran out of power," said Jeg. "The guys have been busy at our R&D facility getting our new engines ready for the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. We are looking forward to getting our new pieces under the hood and put Team Jeg's back into the winner's circle."
