Hungarian GP qualifying - BMW WilliamsF1
Team
Hungarian GP - QUALIFYING 18 August 2001
Weather: Dry. Sunny. Air temperature 30°C. Track temperature 42°C.
It was a day of mixed fortunes for the BMW WilliamsF1 Team as while Ralf
Schumacher with his fourth spot was about where the team expected to be, Juan
Pablo Montoya in eight is a little further back than hoped for.
Ralf Schumacher
Position: 4th
Chassis: FW23 05
Best Time: 1: 15.095
"I think I can be satisfied with the second row of the grid, even though the
gap to the best time is quite large. I am hoping for a good start so maybe I
can improve on this position in the race. I am confident we will be strong in
the race, as we have been in the recent Grands Prix."
Juan Pablo Montoya
Position: 8th
Chassis: FW23 06 (T-Car: FW23 02)
Best Time: 1:15.881
"It was a difficult day. The car improved a lot this morning, but I can't
really push it. There is a point where the car goes to and it won't go any
quicker. We try one thing and it makes it have big understeer, so we cure the
understeer and then I can't turn in. It is quite difficult to drive. I am a
bit disappointed, but we have to now try and find out what are the problems
with the car."
Patrick Head (Technical Director WilliamsF1)
"Ralf's position is where we might have expected, but Juan Pablo is obviously
a bit further back and he has quite a lot of work to do in the race. We are
happy with our choice of tyres and think we can put up a good performance
tomorrow. Michael seems to be in the sort of position here we were in in
Hockenheim, and it is certainly impressive."
Gerhard Berger (BMW Motorsport Director)
"This result confirms our expectations for qualifying, as we knew we would
not be able to fight for a place on the front row on this circuit. Ralf is
only two-tenths behind second place, but Michael's time is in a class of its
own, which we also expected. Both drivers have done some good homework for
the race, so this has made us confident, and now we want to get both cars to
the end of the race and collect some points."
