August 18, 2001Jeff Gordon, No. 24 Dupont Chevrolet Monte Carlo: "I'm pretty happy. A lot of the guys have picked up about three-tenths (from practice speeds), and we hoped that we would do that. The car drove great. I got a little bit free up off of (turn) two. Other than that, the car drove great. That was the best lap we ran all day. We'll take it. Actually, we ran two or three-tenths faster the last time we were here. I'm not sure where some of that speed went. But as long as we've backed it up with a good, solid run we'll be happy with it."
(How does the track today compare with the track conditions in June when it was so hot?) "What's so funny is that I think the track conditions are better today (than they were in June), but we're not going faster. I don't understand that. At least for me, we're not going faster. We actually went faster the last time we were here. I thought the track conditions were great today. Nice cool temperatures. It's nice when it's cloudy and overcast."
(Do you think you can extend your points lead here at Michigan?) "We really don't go into any weekend saying we're going to extend the points lead. We just go into the weekend saying this is what we've got to do with our program. This is a track that we run well at. We'll just see where it all shakes out. But right now, at this point in the season, we've just got to continue to be consistent and do our jobs the way we have the last couple of months. We've got to make sure we don't get overconfident."
