Billy Dee Williams Lands at Planet Hollywood for Oldsmobile Fundraiser
NEW YORK, Aug. 17 More than 2,000 fans showed up to meet film icon Billy Dee Williams in New York's Times Square this week when the legendary actor starred in Oldsmobile's ambitious, month-long promotion to raise funds for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010817/CGF020 ) Williams was delivered to New York's Planet Hollywood in five Oldsmobile Bravadas, which are the primary transportation for the company's "Celebrity Convoy" fundraising campaign. He then conducted a meet and greet with excited fans of all ages, while encouraging donations to the Tom Joyner Foundation supporting students attending HBCUs. The Foundation has distributed more than $9 million to qualified students. The legendary actor who recently appeared in the film "The Ladies' Man" with "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Tim Meadows, is renowned for his galactic roles in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," not to mention parts in the richly memorable "Lady Sings The Blues," "Mahogany" and "Brian's Song." Williams can be seen alongside comic actor Eddie Griffin in the upcoming movie, "Undercover Brother," which was filmed in Canada. Williams' partnership with Oldsmobile was established earlier this year with his recording of two radio spots. The Celebrity Convoy Oldsmobile is taking five of its 2002 Bravada SUVs on the road in convoy fashion in and around the Big Apple, landing at various hot spots and events. Each convoy consists of at least one celebrity who, at each pre-arranged destination, talks about the importance of supporting African-American students. Tom Joyner Foundation donation envelopes are distributed on site at each event. Other celebrities featured during the campaign include Joyner, R&B sensation Gerald Levert, legendary soul music group The O'Jays, hot new recording artist Alicia Keys, "New York Undercover" star Malik Yoba, song-stylist Angie Stone and many more. Oldsmobile will make a donation to the Foundation in the name of each of the participating celebrities. The company will also match donations to the Foundation generated by Convoy attendees.
