GM Powertrain Expands Pontiac Global Headquarters, Breaks Ground On New Engineering Building

PONTIAC, Mich. - A new chapter in General Motors longstanding commitment to the city of Pontiac begins today as GM breaks ground on a second GM Powertrain Engineering facility on the GM Pontiac North Campus. The project is part of a major upgrade to the Pontiac North Campus and includes landscaping, parking, road and other improvements. The city of Pontiac and the state of Michigan also are working together to improve nearby roads as the new facility becomes operational.

"On behalf of the citizens of Pontiac," said Pontiac Mayor Walter Moore, "I am pleased with the past commitment GM has made to our city and to our school district. We have a solid relationship with GM and look forward to the increased job opportunities for our residents. This groundbreaking is another example of GM's commitment to Pontiac and to the future growth of our city." When completed in the summer of 2003, approximately 1,200 engineers and support staff will move to the four-story, 430,000-square-foot facility. Most will be moving from the GM Powertrain Warren Engineering Center, located on the Warren Tech Center campus. The new Pontiac North facility will allow GM to consolidate most of its engine engineering and pre-production operations on the Pontiac North Campus.

"This project strengthens GM Powertrain's ability to design and develop competitive engines on a global basis as we become more common in our processes and take full advantage of consolidation and infrastructure upgrades," said Tom Stephens, group vice president, GM Powertrain.

The project is part of GM's $2 billion Southeast Michigan Campus Plan to upgrade and consolidate GM engineering facilities across the region. The Southeast Michigan Campus Plan affords GM lower structural costs through consolidation of engineering activities and fewer facilities. Since 1997, GM has reduced its facility space in Southeast Michigan by nearly five million square feet.

General Motors selected Ideal Contracting, L.L.C. to design and build the new facility. Ideal Contracting is a Detroit-based, minority-owned company that provides contracting and rigging services for clients in the industrial market and supplies construction services to automotive firms and Tier 1 suppliers.

Ideal will be mentored in the project by Barton Malow and General Motors under GM's Supplier Diversity Program. Barton Malow is Michigan's largest provider of design and construction services and has been associated with Ideal for the past five years.
