As violence continues to plague our schools, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist
Laura Sessions Stepp provides parents with valuable guidelines for raising their
children. Stepp asserts that early adolescence, ages 8-13, is a unique and
pivotal time of change, and the final major opportunity to ensure that children
become happy, loving and successful adults.

Early adolescence is a time when unmatched physical and intellectual growth,
expanding creativity, emerging moral sensibilities, awakening sexuality, and
maturing emotions powerfully converge. Parents and those who interact with
young teens must navigate these tricky waters and find a way to tell “normal”
behaviors from troubled ones, and to know when, how, and how often to intervene.

Stepp, a reporter for The Washington Post, spent two years researching eighteen
families across the country in an effort to compile a cross-section of early
adolescents’ lives. Through these children’s stories, Stepp explores the
social, emotional and intellectual dynamics of early adolescence and offers
positive, practical advice on how to help young teenagers thrive.

Stepp has written about children and families for more than a decade, currently
specializing in the coverage of adolescence for the Style section of The
Washington Post. She was an invited speaker at last year’s White House
Conference on Raising Responsible Teenagers, and also served on the U.S. Surgeon
General’s Healthy People 2000 panel on adolescence.
