AAA Reports: Northern California Gas Prices Continue Tumbling; Second Straight Month Of Double-Digit Decreases At Most Pumps

SAN FRANCISCO--Aug. 14, 2001--Northern California gas prices continued their two-month plunge to some of the lowest prices since February 1999, according to AAA's monthly gas survey released today.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded self-serve gas in Northern California plummeted 20 cents to $1.63, a two-month drop of 36 cents. The Bay Area average is $1.73, a 21 cent monthly drop, with all Bay Area cities well below the $2 mark. Fresno recorded the lowest prices in the state at $1.25, a 35-cent nose-dive since last month.
The national average dropped 4 cents to $1.39.
"Summer price drops are rare, but most welcome," said Bronwyn Hogan, AAA spokeswoman. "The drop in wholesale gasoline prices, combined with a sluggish demand and some price wars breaking out have combined to produce some of the lowest gas prices in years."
Southern California reports an average of $1.62, a drop of 22 cents in one month, with Los Angeles at $1.62.
The California average continued its two-month plunge, and fell 20 cents to $1.63 a gallon.
"Because wholesale gasoline prices fell so low, and because retail prices were so puffed up, West coast prices will probably continue declining through the end of the summer, and through the end of the year," said Alan Kovski, energy analyst. "There is a lot of room for retail prices to drift downward."
Established 100 years ago, AAA offers a wide array of automotive, travel, insurance and financial services. The California State Automobile Association serves 4 million members and is the second largest regional affiliate of the national AAA organization. AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report is the most comprehensive retail gasoline survey available, with over 60,000 self-serve stations surveyed daily every day. Data is provided in cooperation with OPIS Energy Group and Wright Express, LLC.
