Free Vehicle VIN Etching Offered in Fayette County

                  Vehicle Identification Numbers Etched Onto
Vehicle Windows as a Means of Theft Prevention

UNIONTOWN, Pa., Aug. 13 The Pa. Auto Theft Prevention
Authority will co-sponsor a free VIN etching event, held by the Pennsylvania
State Police and the Independent Insurance Agents Association, on Saturday,
August 18, 2001, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Open to the public, the event will
be held at the Wal-Mart parking lot in the Cherry Tree Plaza, off of Route 21,
South Union Township, Pa.
VIN etching is a proven theft deterrent, where the Vehicle's
Identification Number (VIN) is etched on to all the vehicle windows. Would-be
thieves resist stealing a vehicle that is VIN etched because that vehicle is
more easily identified and, if stolen, all glass must be replaced in order to
remove traces of the VIN.
This is a free service provided by the Pa. Auto Theft Prevention
Authority. Members from the Independent Insurance Agents Association, and
State Police from the Uniontown Barracks and the Western Auto Theft Task Force
will etch the first 300 vehicles on a first-come, first-served basis. The
Authority encourages vehicle owners to spend some time on Saturday to take
this step to help protect their vehicles.
