Rüsselsheim -
FOR RELEASE: August 13, 2001 The Opel Astra Today
- New: Full-size curtain airbags, Xenon headlamps, electronic climate control and ESP
- New interior decor
Rüsselsheim -For the 2002 model year, Opel has upgraded the Astra model program significantly. Full-size curtain airbags, ESP, electronic climate control and Xenon headlamps are now either standard equipment or available as optional extras, depending on the cars’ equipment specifications. ESP (the Electronic Stability Program) is now standard equipment on the Astra 2.2, and can be obtained as an optional extra with the 1.8-liter, 16V engine.
The interior has been upgraded extensively, and now has an even more elegant, up-market appearance, with six new upholstery fabrics to choose from. In addition, Astras for the 2002 model year have restyled instrument dials with yellow back-lighting. The Sport package (for all versions of the Astra except the base model and the Eco 4) has white, chrome-ringed dials, the ‘Elegance’ range-topping version has black dials, also with chrome rings. Yet another new feature: all two-door Astra models (with ’Comfort’ equipment specification or higher) now have a center rear head restraint as standard equipment.
Opel supplies the Astra as a three or five-door hatchback, as a four-door sedan and as a station wagon. There are also stylish Coupé and Cabrio models based on the Astra – all in all, an unsurpassed selection in the compact, mid-size category.
Top-of-the-Range ‘Elegance’ now with Exceptionally Full Equipment Package
The Astra ‘Comfort’ is positioned above the entry-level model with a factory-fitted equipment list including central locking, air conditioning, power front windows and three lap-and-shoulder rear seat belts with head restraints. The Astra ‘Selection’ has even more to offer: power exterior mirrors, the CDR 500 stereo radio with CD player and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Customers opting for the top ‘Elegance’ model, will find their Astra equipped with full-size curtain airbags, electronic climate control, Xenon headlamps with a cleaning system (with 1.8 16V, 2.2 16V and 2.0 DTI 16V engines), a leather-covered steering wheel with height adjustment, wood trim, power front and rear windows and special 15-inch alloy wheels. These – and the newly designed 16-inch alloys - are available as an option with every Astra variant.
Broad Range of Lively, Low-Emission Engines
The Astra’s list of power units starts with the 55 kW (75 hp), 1.2 16V engine. Above this come the 1.6 (62 kW/85 hp), 1.6 16V (74 kW/100 hp), 1.8 16V (92 kW/125 hp) and 2.2 16V (108 kW/147 hp) units. All of them comply with the Euro 4 exhaust emission limits. The Astra can also be ordered with a choice of three turbocharged direct-injection diesel engines, all with four valves per cylinder: the 1.7 DTI 16V (55 kW/75 hp), the 2.0 DI 16V (62 kW/80 hp) and the 2.0 DTI 16V (74 kW/100 hp). The engine offered as standard with automatic transmission, the 2.0 DI 16V, consumes 6.7 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (MVEG test). The two diesels with charge-air intercooling, supplied with a manual-shift gearbox, are particularly economical on fuel: their test figures are only 4.8 (1.7 DTI) and 5.7 (2.0 DTI) l/100 km.
Only the Astra Eco 4, the first family car on the market to run on only four liters of fuel per 100 km, can out-save its diesel cousins. It is based on the Astra 1.7 DTI and is content with only 4.4 liters of diesel per 100 km – the best value achieved in the compact midsize car category.
