Good and Bad News for Law at The Glen
WATKINS GLEN, New York (August 10, 2001) - Grand-Am GT class points leader Darren Law had a less-than-great day at the Bully Hill 250 at Watkins Glen International. Only five laps in to the race Law's teammate, Matt Drendel, was tapped in the rear by a prototype, causing him to spin and almost hit the wall.
"I was upset with the whole incident with the Ferrari," Law said. "It was a blessing that we were able to get the car back out. Cole and the team did a great job of getting the car back on the track."
With flames coming from the exhaust, the #81 Motorola/Commscope/G&W Motorsports Porsche GT3-R was brought into the pits to fix the rear damage. After the brief stop, Law climbs aboard the car on lap 12. For the remainder of the race, Law is running in 23rd and 24th position overall and 8th and 9th in the GT class.
"I was just being as cautious as possible," Law said exhuastingly. "I didn't want any problems, I just wanted to finish the race."
At a time when the GT driver and team championships are really heating up, this seems like an extremely bad scenario. But Law and the rest of the G&W crew would get the best break they could ask for in this situation.
On lap 17 the #54 JET Motorsports BMW M3, who is in contention for the GT championships with G&W, goes off into the gravel and comes in with a flat front tire. This causes the BMW to go three laps off the GT leader, only two positions in front of the #81.
"We were just happy to finish," Law said. " I had the championships in my mind the whole time."
Although both teams were plagued with unfortunate incidences, the BMW finished only three spots ahead of the #81 machine. Law and the G&W team will head into the season finale at Daytona International Speedway in mid-September holding on to their team and driver points lead.
