Leading Propane Company Ferrellgas Relies on Fleet of Kenworth T300s

KIRKLAND, Wash. - August 9, 2001 - You don't become the nation's largest
propane company by making mistakes. That's why making the right truck
spec'ing decisions are essential for Liberty, Mo.-based Ferrellgas.

According to Scott Beeson, Ferrellgas' fleet manager, truck purchasing boils
down to math and driver preference. "When doing the math on which truck make
to purchase, we incorporate initial cost, cost-per-mile, longevity and
resale value. That's critical, because we run nearly 2,500 medium-duty
trucks," Beeson said. "We also look at driver preference, because safety and
driver comfort go hand-in-hand. When we did all our homework, we decided to
go with Kenworth T300s."

Ferrellgas' newest T300s are spec'd with Cat 3126 engines, each producing
230 horsepower and driven through either 7-speed Spicer transmissions or
Allison's MD 3060 World transmissions. The company currently runs 225
Kenworth T300s and has 450 more on order for delivery over the next three
years. The T300s will be operated throughout the country, where Ferrellgas
has more than 630 propane districts that cater to commercial and residential
accounts.

According to Beeson, the propane industry may very well be the toughest
environment for a Class 7 truck. "Our trucks are never given a break," he
said. "By that I mean they're driven out fully loaded to 33,000 pounds and
when they've delivered their product, they're still carrying around 17,000
pounds due to the heavy propane barrels. These have to be stout trucks that
last -- we plan to keep our Kenworths 12 years. What's more, they have to
be driver friendly... safety is a huge concern for us."

Ferrellgas based its decision to purchase more Kenworths on its past
experience with the T300, plus through recommendations from drivers and
service managers. Costs are tracked closely at Ferrellgas, and "the T300
features the lowest cost-per-mile of any truck make we run," said Beeson.
"In addition, the serviceability of the T300s has been excellent. Plus,
drivers have an easy time of getting in and out of the vehicles. That may
not sound like much, but injuries often happen getting in and out of a
truck, so how the truck is designed is critical to our company."

But perhaps the biggest selling point is Kenworth's heritage. "We also run
a fleet of Kenworth T800s, and many of them have more than a million miles
logged," said Beeson. "If you look at a T300, even compare it part to part,
you'll see a lot in common with the T800 - it's a downsized version of the
tractor. So, with our planned use of 12 years, in which we plan to log
200,000 to 300,000 miles per T300, we know they'll hold up and even have a
very good resale value.

"Another reason truck life is so critical is because it costs between
$25,000 and $30,000 to change out propane barrels," Beeson said. "A barrel
has a 30- to 35-year life, so if we can reduce the number of change outs to
a new truck by just one, then we can save a substantial amount of money."

Coordination Between Kenworth and Body Builder Saves Ferrellgas Money

Prior to Ferrellgas' new T300s coming off the Kenworth production line,
preparation and coordination took place between Kenworth engineers, the
local Kenworth dealership -- MHC Trucks-Kansas City -- Ferrellgas, and their
body builder. "I was very impressed that MHC took the time to coordinate a
conference call to discuss ways to make tank installation easier and more
cost effective," said Beeson. "Through this interaction, Kenworth was able
to move their exhaust piping two inches at the factory which allowed a PTO
pump to be easily installed. A body builder wiring harness was also
discussed and agreed upon. The bottom line is that, by having this dialogue,
we were able to save both time and money."
