Golfers, Volunteers and Celebrities Join Forces in the Drive to Find a Cure For Juvenile Diabetes
Max McGee Golf Invitational, Sponsored by Walser Automotive, is a Personal Mission for Its Founder MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 9 Former Green Bay Packer legend Max McGee has experienced great success on the football field. But it's a fight far away from the gridiron that consumes him now, and that he hopes will produce his greatest victory yet. On August 20, McGee will be joined by friends, fellow athletes and supporters for the Sixth Annual Max McGee Golf Invitational sponsored by the Walser Automotive Group. The event will take place at Bearpath Country Club in Eden Prairie, and 100 percent of the proceeds raised will go to the Max McGee Fund (Maxi Fund) for research on juvenile diabetes. The Maxi Fund was created after McGee's son was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of two-and-a-half. Since that time, McGee has dedicated himself to working for a cure for the disease. "I had diabetes in my family before, but once my son was affected it brought the issue into a whole new light for me," said McGee. "I've learned a lot about this disease and I'm confident that a cure is possible, but we need resources to find that cure." Juvenile diabetes is the most common chronic illness found in children today. The Max McGee Fund is committed to establishing and sustaining the state-of-the-art Max McGee National Research Center, dedicated to helping children with diabetes. The Center conducts research focusing on identifying the genes involved with the disease, and discovering how diabetes destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Since its inception, the Maxi Fund has generated more than $5.5 million for the Maxi Center for Juvenile Diabetes. Organizers hope to raise more than $300 thousand at this year's event. "The Maxi Fund and this research center are focused on one thing -- to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes," said McGee. "This year we're really fortunate to be joined in our effort by some generous sponsors, including Walser Automotive, so that we can take this event to the next level and make a real impact in fighting this disease." "I know how much this cause means to Max and to me," said Paul Walser, of Walser Automotive, whose immediate family also is affected by diabetes. "We are proud to help contribute to this year's event, especially knowing that all proceeds go directly to the actual medical research being conducted to find a cure for juvenile diabetes." The Walser Automotive Group is locally owned and operated with 12 metro locations, 15 franchises, a collision shop and leasing office.
